Thessaloniki "Macedonia" Airport (Google Maps)
We’ll meet at Macedonia Airport at 11:25 a.m. and take a direct flight to the Austrian capital, Vienna, with Austrian Airlines. As soon as we arrive, after picking up our luggage, our tour guide will be waiting to meet us and get our itinerary started. During our tour, among other sights, we’ll admire the Kunsthaus—a complex of buildings in the abstract style—and the Baroque Belvedere Palace complex of Prince Eugene of Savoy, now a museum housing works by modern artists and those of the Modernist movement. We continue on to Charles Square, home to the Church of St. Charles Borromeo and the Palace of the Society of Friends of Music, and enter the famous Ringstrasse (the ring road encircling the historic center). We’ll see the State Opera House, the Hofburg Imperial Winter Palace complex, the twin museums of Art History and Natural History, the Museum Quarter, the Parliament, the former Imperial Theater across from City Hall, the University, and the Votivkirche (Votive Church). We will then head to the city center, where we will walk through the historic Greek neighborhood with the Greek Orthodox churches of St. George and the Holy Trinity, and, crossing on foot through the historic center, with the famous Cathedral of St. Stephen, we’ll end up at City Hall Square. Free time for lunch. Transfer and check-in at our hotel.
We had breakfast at our hotel, and today we set out on a walking tour with our experienced guide, during which we’ll explore hidden corners of the historic center. We’ll have the chance to see City Hall Square, Café Landmann—a favorite haunt of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis—Scottish Square, Freyung, the famous passageway leading to Café Central, which was the gathering place of 19th-century Austrian intellectuals. We’ll walk through the beautiful Naglergasse alley and end up at the Graben and the Kohlmarkt, home to one of the city’s best pastry shops, the legendary Demmel. Next, we’ll head to the MuseumsQuartier (MQ) in Vienna, one of the largest cultural complexes in the world, offering a dynamic blend of art, architecture, and urban culture. There, you’ll find two identical buildings, one across from the other. These are two of the world’s leading museums. We’re talking about the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) and the Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum). These buildings date back to an era that marked Vienna’s transformation into one of the leading metropolises in Europe and the world. Art lovers will have time to enjoy the exhibits. Free time in the city center for lunch and souvenir shopping.
Breakfast, and then we set off on an optional excursion to Mozart’s birthplace, Salzburg. Our route through the Central Alps takes us through four federal states of Austria, offering a variety of rich visual experiences. We’ll traverse the “Alpine Republic” from east to west, ascending from the Danube Valley toward the Alpine region in the idyllic Salzkammergut lake district. Here we see some of the country’s largest lakes. The architecture of the rural landscape and the Alpine hinterland is particularly fascinating. We then arrive at the “Rome of the Alps,” the “Jerusalem of the German-speaking Christian world”—the fairytale city of Salzburg. We walk through the gardens of Mirabell Palace, passing the Mozarteum University of Music on our left, and see the Hora Theater, the Mozart family home, and the birthplace of King Otto of Greece and the Greek-born composer Herbert von Karajan. We cross the Makart Bridge—or the “Locked Hearts” Bridge—over the Salzach River and enter the Old Town, a remnant of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. Strolling through arcades and narrow alleys, we reach the famous Getreidegasse, home to Mozart’s birthplace and City Hall. We continue to the Palace of the Prince-Archbishops, next to the Renaissance St. Peter’s Cathedral, and the monasteries of St. Peter and the Franciscans. Free time, followed by the return to Vienna.
Breakfast and departure for a lovely optional excursion to the Vienna Woods. We will then visit (from the outside) Licht Steinburg, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, which served as the ancestral castle of the family that later founded the well-known Principality of Liechtenstein. Next, we will visit the Catholic Monastery of the Holy Cross (Heiligenkreuz). We will pass by the former hunting lodge at Mayerling, known for the tragedy that unfolded on the fateful night of January 29, 1889, when the heir to the Habsburg throne, Rudolf, was found dead alongside his mistress, Maria Vetsera, who was of Greek descent. Finally, via a beautiful route, we’ll arrive in Baden, a former imperial resort that remains one of the most famous spa towns in Central Europe to this day. Free time for lunch on your own, then return to Vienna. Next, we’ll visit one of Europe’s most important attractions, the famous Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It served as the summer residence of the Habsburgs from the late 17th century until 1918. There, we’ll have a little time outside in the palace gardens to take some souvenir photos. Return to the hotel and free time. For the evening, we recommend a refreshing cocktail at the popular Do&Co bar with a view of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
Every trip comes to an end, but the memories remain indelible. After breakfast, we’ll have time for one last stroll down Kärntner Straße to pick up some souvenirs (such as the famous Mozartkugeln chocolates). We’ll then head to Vienna Airport for our return flight. Note: The order of the itinerary may vary depending on circumstances, but nothing will be omitted.
