Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1THESSALONIKI - EPIDAURUS - NAFPLIO - TOLO

We’re setting out early in the morning because our day is going to be incredibly interesting even before we reach our final destination. After a few quick stops for a quick coffee, we’ll make our most important stop at Epidaurus, the most significant ancient site dedicated to the god Asclepius. It became famous throughout Greece for its Asclepieion, one of the most significant of antiquity, and, of course, the ancient theater, a work by the architect Polykleitos, which remains unsurpassed even today in beauty and acoustics. It’s amazing that even the actor’s breath can be heard all the way to the back row!!! With wonderful memories of this unique site—a World Heritage Site of great historical significance—we set off for the beautiful city of Nafplio. A stately city with a rich history that you simply can’t help but love. A beautiful setting that captivates you no matter how many times you see it. We’ll tour the most important sights, such as the Church of Saint Spyridon (where Ioannis Kapodistrias was assassinated), the Church of Saint George (with important icons and frescoes, such as the copy of da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”), Three Admirals Square with City Hall, the Government House (or “Palataki”), as well as Philellinon Square. The tour is over!! We’ll have time for a brief stroll along the main pedestrian street of Vasileos Konstantinou with its countless shops, down Staikopoulou Street with its many small taverns, the Bouboulinas seaside promenade, as well as Psaromachala, the oldest neighborhood that has been inhabited since the early 13th century. A friendly tip!! Look for “The Italian,” who offers handmade Italian gelato and sorbet in various fruit flavors and has become a city landmark. Transfer to and check-in at our hotel.

DAY 2TOLO - MONEMVASIA - GYTHIO - SPARTA

We’re sure you wanted us to stay in Nafplio for at least… many more days. We promise we’ll be back. After a hearty breakfast to recharge our energy, we set off for the medieval, Byzantine, and Venetian town of Monemvasia. It is best known for its medieval fortress, which is literally a small islet connected by a 400-meter-long bridge forming a narrow isthmus to the modern coastal townacross from a town on the Laconian coast. The surviving buildings and structures within the castle include defensive works of the outer castle and several small Byzantine churches. Many of the streets are narrow and suitable only for pedestrians. Monemvasia is nicknamed the “Gibraltar of the East” because, on a smaller scale, it bears a striking resemblance to the Rock of Gibraltar. Upon entering the town, the main street with its Byzantine cobblestone path leads to the Central Square, featuring the old cannon and the Church of Christ the Saviour. We’ll have free time to enjoy the unique view and the beauty of the landscape. Continuing our journey, we’ll visit Gythio, a picturesque port town, built amphitheatrically on a hillside, with an island-like charm, and we’ll end up in Sparta, the capital of Laconia. Check-in at the hotel and time to explore this beautiful city. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3SPARTA - MYSTRAS - DYROS CAVE - MANI

We’re enjoying our breakfast and are ready to leave. The castle town of Mystras awaits us and is literally “lurking” nearby, as it’s very close—almost right next to Sparta—and transports us back to the Byzantine Empire… Cobblestone streets lined with fortresses, churches, monasteries, palaces, and mansions take us on a journey into the past. A stroll through its stone-paved alleys is a journey through history that we’ll never forget. A visit to the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Demetrius is a must. It was here that Constantine Palaiologos was crowned emperor—the only emperor to be crowned outside of Constantinople. We continue our tour of Eastern Mani and the historic Areopolis. Amid the austere landscape of Mani, nature—with incomparable artistry and patience—has sculpted a wonder beyond imagination… snow-white stalactites and stalagmites, sparkling crystals adorn every corner, creating an unparalleled spectacle! To wrap things up, we’re keeping it “Mani-style” and will visit the beautiful port town of Gythio. A stroll along the waterfront, the obligatory cup of coffee, and then back to Sparta.

DAY 4SPARTA - OLYMPIA - PATRAS

Breakfast is the best meal of the day, and we’re going to make the most of it. Afterward, we’ll set off for the “Valley of the Gods,” as the area of Ancient Olympia is known. One of the world’s most important archaeological sites, it attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is located in the beautiful valley of the Alpheus River, where the most renowned sanctuary of ancient Greece flourished, dedicated to the father of the gods, Zeus. In addition to the Sanctuary of Zeus—with its temples and buildings directly related to worship—the archaeological site includes various structures built around it, such as athletic facilities used for the preparation and staging of the Olympic Games, auxiliary buildings—both utilitarian and administrative—as well as structures of a secular nature. The changes continue. Leaving behind the “ancient spirit, the immortal,” we set off for Patras. A vibrant, youthful city, a bustling port, and the queen of the Greek carnival. Its well-planned street layout, with wide main streets running parallel to the harbor, perpendicular pedestrian walkways, and large squares, creates a sense of openness and is perfect for walking. Three Allies Square, across from the harbor, is a classic meeting spot with the Clock Tower and the—now deserted—historic neoclassical hotel “Majestic,” which has hosted historical figures. The walk leading to the restored Lighthouse—west of the harbor—is a favorite spot for watching the sunset. Behind us stands the impressive church of Saint Andrew, the city’s patron saint, where everyone gathers on his feast day. We check into our hotel; since we chose a central location, we’ll be able to take an afternoon stroll through the famous “Psila Alonia, which our friends from Patras recommended as the most beautiful in the city. Overnight stay.

DAY 5PATRA - NAFPAKTOS - DELPHI - THESSALONIKI

We’ll need a good breakfast today because it’s the day we head back, and we’ll need our strength. But let’s not get too melancholy, because we’ll be visiting a number of beautiful places. Our first stop is Nafpaktos, a city steeped in history that knows how to keep its visitors captivated. From the bustling life in its picturesque Venetian harbor to its narrow alleys… We’ll pay our respects to Miguel de Cervantes (author of *Don Quixote*), whose statue in the harbor reminds us that he took part in the famous naval battle of the same name, and we’ll go to learn our future— and what better place to do so than Delphi, with its famous oracle!! Delphi was the navel of the earth, where, according to mythology, the two eagles sent by Zeus from the ends of the universe met to find the center of the world, and for many centuries it served as the spiritual and religious center and symbol of unity for ancient Hellenism. Impressed by the mystical atmosphere and enriched by images and experiences, we set off on our return journey.
