Surrounded by the Indian Ocean, its coastline features idyllic beaches, while the mainland offers a fascinating variety of landscapes, from wildlife-rich jungles to misty highlands covered in tea plantations. It boasts more than two thousand years of recorded history, and the remarkable achievements of the early Sinhalese civilization are still visible in the ruined cities. And now, get a glimpse of what awaits you on this journey. We’ll relax on endless beaches, explore ancient cities, mingle with its hospitable people as well as friendly elephants, traverse landscapes of indescribable beauty aboard the much-photographed trains, we’ll savor the famous tea, dive into thrilling depths, and be initiated into the philosophy of absolute Zen, as well as Ayurvedic therapies.
Thessaloniki "Macedonia" Airport (Google Maps)
You’ve had your bags packed for days, but then again, maybe not, if you’re a last-minute type. It doesn’t really matter, since the result is the same… You’re going on a trip. We’ll meet up at the airport, where you’ll get to know your cool travel buddies in person. We’ll board our flight to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, ready to leave everything behind and switch to “exotic mode.” The adventure begins now!
We arrive in Sri Lanka in the morning. Since Colombo doesn’t have much to offer, we’re heading to Sigiriya. Get ready for a demanding day, as we’ll be covering quite a few miles today. Of course, we’ll make the necessary stops. Many people stop at the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala, but we won’t be doing that since it isn’t considered an “ethical” elephant sanctuary. Before we reach the hotel, we’ll make a stop at the island’s largest vegetable market. This colorful local market is an important economic hub for the island, as it is one of the main places where the country’s harvest is bought and sold to vendors. From day one, we want you to experience the culture of this place, and a market is the ideal spot. Don’t hesitate to try fruits you’ve never seen before, as well as pineapple or mango, since they’re tastier here. We’ll continue to the hotel, where you’ll have time to rest. If you feel your body urgently needs a reset, we recommend, as an optional activity, an Ayurvedic massage. Using herbal oils and traditional techniques, it’s the best way to shake off the fatigue of the flight and “recharge” after the trip. If, on the other hand, your adrenaline is already pumping, you can opt for a hike up Pidurangala Rock to watch the sunset. It offers the most spectacular view you can get, as you’ll see the imposing Lion’s Rock turn orange right in front of you. Keep in mind, however, that it takes some effort, involves a small additional cost (about €3), and definitely requires your athletic shoes, as you’ll need to scramble among large rocks at the end. But the moment the sun disappears over the horizon will be unforgettable!
Today, we’re waking up very early, so we’ll be taking a breakfast box. We’ll head to the most famous landmark not only of Sigiriya but of the entire country: Lion’s Rock. The view of the impressive rock rising 200 meters high, the ruins of the ancient fortress at its summit, and the local legends and stories lost in time will take us on a journey back to the past. Carved into the rock, King Kashyapa’s ancient fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With every step, we’ll discover something new as we admire the ruins of gardens once teeming with life, featuring ancient fountains and unique murals. We continue to the village of Sigiriya, where you’ll get a taste of rural life in Sri Lanka. After conquering the summit and filling your phone with photos, you’ll head to the village of Sigiriya to get a true taste of the island’s rural life. And since exploring works up an appetite, it’s time for a cooking class. But be prepared: Sri Lankan cuisine is traditionally quite spicy! Tonight we’ll be staying in Sigiriya.
Today we set off for a beautiful mountain town and the former capital of the country’s ancient kings, Kandy. Of course, the road always holds surprises, and one of them is the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, a unique religious monument carved into the rock, filled with murals and statues of Buddha. An introduction to the deep spirituality of the place. We continue our journey with a stop that will “awaken” all our senses… A visit to a traditional Spice Garden. Here we’ll see how cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper are grown. This is the moment to understand why this island was once called the “Island of Spices.” Next up is the Sacred Temple of the Tooth, said to house one of the most important relics: a tooth of the Buddha himself! According to Buddhist tradition, this tooth was collected from Buddha’s burial site and secretly transported to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD, hidden… in a princess’s hair! Since then, it has been considered a most sacred relic and a symbol of royal authority, as whoever possessed the tooth also held the “divine right” to rule the country. You may not see it up close, but you’ll feel the energy of the place. In the afternoon, you’ll watch a Cultural Dance Show that will stay with you forever. This is not just a dance, but a ritual. You’ll see dancers in striking traditional costumes and heavy silver jewelry performing incredible acrobatics and flips in the air, with movements reminiscent of forest animals, all to the deafening beat of the traditional Geta Beraya drums. The performance culminates in the thrilling fire dance, where the dancers walk barefoot over burning coals without getting burned, in a supreme display of faith and inner strength. Tonight we will spend the night in Kandy.
Today, if you’d like, get ready for an authentic experience as we visit the indigenous Vedda people. They are a group of indigenous people who, despite being the first inhabitants of this island—dating back to before the 6th century B.C.—are known to most people by very little or nothing at all. The Veddas were traditionally forest dwellers who foraged for food, hunted, and lived in close-knit groups in caves within the dense jungles of Sri Lanka. They lived in caves and on cliffs, wore bark clothing, hunted game with bows and arrows, and gathered wild plants and honey. Their religion was essentially a cult of the dead. They believed that ancestral spirits entered the bodies of shamans, through whom they communicated with their descendants. Here you’ll have the chance to see how they hunt using bows and arrows, how they collect honey from a beehive, how they make fire by rubbing stones together, as well as their traditional dances and songs. Today, the Veddas are believed to represent less than 1% of the national population. For many centuries, the Veddas were stigmatized and oppressed by Sinhalese rule and were relegated solely to tourist attractions. They adopted Sinhala and no longer speak their own language. Ethnically, they are related to the indigenous peoples of the jungles of southern India and to the earliest populations of Southeast Asia. They have now been largely absorbed into the modern Sinhalese population. In 1911, their number was reported to be approximately 5,300; by 1964, the government estimated their population at around 800, and by the 1970s, they had essentially ceased to exist as a distinct community. As is the case with many indigenous groups, there is little evidence to suggest their origins. Archaeologists link their genetic pool to a prehistoric man known as Balangoda Man, who lived 48,000 to 3,800 years ago and was named after the historical sites in the town of Balangoda, where his skeleton was first discovered, 160 kilometers from Colombo. Even with the impact of modernization, they cherish their traditions. Before choosing this optional excursion, keep in mind that each trip to and from the village takes about 3.5 hours, with plenty of twists and turns. Of course, we’ll make the necessary stop for coffee to recharge our energy. To reach the heart of the Vedda community, you’ll need to cross the jungle, possibly step in mud, and wade through streams. Dress appropriately and be prepared to get a little dirty, because the path here isn’t paved with carpets. Tonight you’ll spend the night in Kandy.
We leave the tranquility of the temples behind for a moment and dive into pure adrenaline, stopping in Kitulgala. Get ready for the ultimate whitewater rafting experience in the heart of Sri Lanka! You’ll conquer the raging currents of the Kelani River. Put on your life jacket, hold the paddle tight, and… off we go for a challenge that’s perfect even for beginners. Together with your team, you’ll try to steer the boat through the foaming waters and spectacular rapids. It’s not just an activity; it’s a wonderful experience that will make you scream and bring you even closer to your fellow travelers. Next, we’ll visit a local Ceylon tea factory to learn all the secrets of this exquisite beverage. It comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, grown in the mountains of Sri Lanka. The influence of climatic conditions gives the product a variety of flavors and aromas, synonymous with quality. Currently, Sri Lanka is the fourth-largest tea producer in the world. We continue on to Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England” due to its colonial architecture and cool climate. It is surrounded by lush tea plantations and mountainous landscapes, creating a truly unique setting. Tonight we will spend the night in this town.
Come on, you went to Sri Lanka and didn’t take the train tour? That’s a line no World Party Traveller has ever heard. Not to brag, but we take you to the best spots! It’s time to cross this off your travel bucket list and make it happen—the absolute highlight of Sri Lanka… The dreamy train ride, lasting about 3 hours, glides leisurely between mountains and endless green plains. Time will truly seem to stretch out (and so will your pupils) as we traverse these dreamlike landscapes. Next, we head to the Nine Arch Bridge, the ultimate symbol of Ella and perhaps the most Instagrammable attraction in the entire country. We’ll walk along the iconic tracks that disappear into the jungle and find the perfect spot for photos. The day ends with free time in Ella, the village that serves as a meeting point for travelers from every corner of the globe. It’s the place where cultures blend in the lively bars and cafés, and the atmosphere is so laid-back that you easily strike up a conversation with people you’ve just met. Tonight we’ll be staying in Ella.
After a hearty breakfast to fuel us up, we’re off on a hike! Today’s destination is Little Adam’s Peak, the “mini” version of Sri Lanka’s sacred mountain. The trail is super easy and beginner-friendly, so no matter how much chicken curry you ate yesterday, the summit is yours for the taking! Before we head back, you can zip–line over the Ella Valley. With a length of over half a kilometer and speeds reaching 80 km/h, the view of the lush green hills will be unforgettable. And if you want more, there are extra activities available on-site (such as rock climbing, quad biking, or rappelling) that you can choose and pay for directly there, depending on how adventurous you’re feeling today!
Today, after breakfast, we’re heading to Mirissa, one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved beach destinations. It is a small, picturesque fishing village on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast and the perfect place to relax while enjoying the ocean horizon and the absolute tranquility offered by the shade of a palm tree! But before we get there, you can opt for an experience you won’t want to miss…. A safari in Yala National Park. Get ready for a three-hour jeep adventure in the “arena” of the wild. Yala is world-famous for hosting the highest density of leopards on the planet. In other words, relative to the park’s size, it’s home to the most leopards. Seeing this majestic feline cross your path is the ultimate "jackpot" of the trip! In addition to the rare leopards, you’ll see elephants, crocodiles, and monkeys. So put on your hat, keep your camera at the ready, and keep your eyes peeled. Remember, though, that on a safari nothing is 100% guaranteed, because we’re not at a zoo—we’re in their home! Especially when it comes to leopards, since they’re solitary and very “shy” animals, you’ll need a bit of luck. It could be right next to you, just 5 meters away, and you might not see it if it doesn’t move. The drivers, of course, have a “keen eye” and communicate with each other via walkie-talkies, so as soon as one is spotted, it’s… all systems go! We continue on to Weligama, where we’ll spend the night.
Missing the beach? Throw on some casual clothes and grab your swimsuit! All you’ll need here is a sarong and some sunscreen… Oh! And of course, someone to keep your cocktails topped off. And wait until you hear the rest! Today we’re heading to Sri Lanka’s ultimate hidden gem… Hiriketiya! Imagine a small horseshoe-shaped cove, nestled among palm trees, where the surf vibe and chill music from the beach bars set the tone. It’s the perfect spot to relax, take a dip in the tropical waters, and enjoy a coconut. For those who want to experience the Indian Ocean to the fullest, there’s an optional surf lesson available! Even if you’ve never stood on a board before, the gentle waves of “Hiri” are the ideal place to give it a try and snap some epic photos. If you don’t want to go to Hiriketiya, you can spend some free time in Mirissa. There, you can visit Coconut Tree Hill. The hill has become perhaps the most photographed spot in Mirissa, and it’s easy to see why. The entire hill overlooks the magnificent turquoise ocean and is covered with tall coconut trees swaying in the sea breeze. Here you can take wonderful photos with the sparkling Indian Ocean behind you.
Today, you’re in charge of the itinerary! Mirissa is the perfect place to do whatever you want. And since one swim is never enough, get ready for the ultimate beach-hopping adventure along the south’s most iconic shores! We’re heading to Jungle Beach, a hidden paradise surrounded by lush vegetation and crystal-clear waters, straight out of a shipwreck movie. We continue to Midigama, the beach with the authentic surf vibe, where time moves slowly and the atmosphere is 100% chill. Our route takes us to Ahangama. The waves create the perfect backdrop for the best photos of your trip. Three different beaches, three different worlds, all in a single day. The day is yours… Relax, take endless photos, enjoy, and experience Mirissa… just the way you like it!
Today is your last day on this unique trip, and you have some free time before we head to the airport. Your flight is in the evening, so you can take one last stroll, enjoy a final coffee with a view, or simply say goodbye to this place in your own way. We board the bus and head to Galle, the beautiful fortified city with a strong colonial atmosphere. We’ll have about 2 hours of free time to wander through the picturesque alleys, do some last-minute shopping, and enjoy a final meal at one of the restaurants in the old town. We’ll then board the bus for the final leg of the journey to the airport. As we drive through the city center, we’ll enjoy a panoramic tour, getting one last taste of Sri Lanka’s rhythms and sights. You’ll return home with a smile and a heart full of moments that even you might find hard to believe you experienced. Just think—only a few days ago, you were strangers to one another at the airport. And now? You might feel that some of these “chance” travelers have become part of your story, your own adventure. You might even have bonded with some of them through laughter, conversations, and the “wows” of the journey. A trip that perhaps began as a vacation… and ended as a life experience.
