Renaissance Tuscany – Cinque Terre (from Thessaloniki)

After breakfast, we depart for Florence, one of Europe’s most important cities and the undisputed capital of the Renaissance. Few cities in the world have had such a profound influence on the history of art, architecture, and culture as Florence. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante, Botticelli, and so many other leading figures lived and created here. Our tour begins at the impressive Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its iconic dome designed by Brunelleschi, one of the most significant architectural achievements of the Renaissance. We’ll see the Baptistery with its famous “Gates of Paradise” and Giotto’s bell tower, which together form one of Italy’s most beautiful architectural ensembles. We’ll continue to the historic Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florence’s political life, where we’ll admire the Palazzo Vecchio and the famous sculptures of the Loggia dei Lanzi. From there, we’ll walk to the legendary Ponte Vecchio, the city’s only bridge to survive the bombings of World War II, lined with jewelry stores and goldsmiths’ workshops. We’ll also have free time to stroll through the San Lorenzo market, do some shopping, visit a museum, or simply enjoy a glass of wine or a coffee on the banks of the Arno River, observing the unique rhythm of life in a city that remains one of the world’s greatest open-air museums. Late in the afternoon, we return to Montecatini Terme, our minds filled with images of a city that is hard to leave without being moved.

After breakfast, we set out for a day that best captures the authentic spirit of Tuscany. Our first destination is the enchanting Siena, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on three hills, it has retained its charm unchanged for centuries, with its stone palaces, narrow cobblestone alleys, and imposing squares creating a unique atmosphere. During our tour, we’ll visit the famous Piazza del Campo, one of Italy’s most beautiful squares, where the historic Palio di Siena horse race takes place twice a year, a tradition that has continued uninterrupted since the Middle Ages and is a symbol of the city. We’ll admire the imposing Siena Cathedral, one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture, with its distinctive black-and-white marble façade and the impressive decoration of its interior. We then leave Siena behind and head toward the renowned Chianti region, one of Italy’s most important wine-growing areas. Our route takes us through landscapes of unique beauty, with endless vineyards, olive groves, stone farmhouses, and countless cypress trees that make up the classic image of Tuscany. Here we’ll visit a select traditional winery, where we’ll be guided through the production facilities and aging cellars, gaining firsthand insight into the history and philosophy behind the renowned Chianti Classico wines. This will be followed by a wine tasting of select wines, paired with local specialties such as traditional pecorino, Tuscan salami, bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil, and other authentic regional flavors. The day concludes in the enchanting town of San Gimignano, one of Italy’s most distinctive medieval towns, known as “Medieval Manhattan” thanks to the fourteen imposing stone towers that still dominate the skyline. We’ll stroll through the picturesque cobblestone streets, the small squares, and the traditional shops, and we’ll have the opportunity to sample the city’s famous, award-winning gelato, considered among the best in Italy. Late in the afternoon, we’ll return to Montecatini Terme, having experienced one of the most authentic and charming sides of Tuscany.

Today offers you the opportunity to take part in one of the most impressive excursions of our entire trip. Optionally, we’ll head to La Spezia, the gateway to the world-famous Cinque Terre—a region of unique natural beauty protected by UNESCO and considered one of Italy’s top destinations. From La Spezia, we board the local train, which follows one of the most beautiful railway routes in Europe, passing through tunnels and along steep coastlines with continuous views of the Ligurian Sea. We’ll visit two or three of the national park’s most distinctive villages and, depending on the day’s schedule, Monterosso al Mare. Each village has its own unique character: colorful houses perched on the cliffs, small natural harbors, fishing boats, narrow alleys filled with flowers, and panoramic views that look like they’re straight out of a postcard create a setting of unique beauty. We’ll have free time for walks, taking photos, shopping for local products, and having lunch by the sea, sampling fresh seafood or the traditional Ligurian pesto, which originated in this region. In the afternoon, we’ll return to La Spezia and then on to Montecatini, having enjoyed an experience that for many is the highlight of the trip.

After breakfast, we say goodbye to Montecatini Terme and set off for charming Lucca, one of the most atmospheric and well-preserved cities in Tuscany. Lucca is surrounded by its imposing Renaissance walls, which remain almost completely intact and today serve as a wonderful pedestrian promenade and recreational area. During our tour, we’ll explore the unique Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, built on the foundations of an ancient Roman amphitheater and perhaps the city’s most iconic square. We’ll see the imposing Cathedral of St. Martin, the Guinigi Tower with its famous trees at the top, and we’ll stroll through the picturesque alleys of the city where the great Italian composer Giacomo Puccini was born. Next, we’ll head to iconic Pisa, one of Italy’s most recognizable cities. Our visit will focus on the impressive Piazza dei Miracoli, where we’ll admire the famous Leaning Tower, the magnificent Cathedral, and the Baptistery, one of Europe’s most significant architectural complexes. We’ll have plenty of time for photos, a stroll, and one last Italian coffee before saying goodbye to Tuscany. In the afternoon, we’ll head to the Bologna area, where we’ll spend our final night. Shortly after midnight, we’ll head to the airport, our minds filled with memories of a tour that combined Renaissance art, medieval history, the authentic flavors of Tuscany, and the unique landscapes of the Italian countryside.
