Meet at “Macedonia” Airport at 6:10 a.m. and take an Aegean flight to Frankfurt. Upon arrival, we’ll head to the uniquely beautiful city of Würzburg, the starting point of the famous Romantic Road. We will visit Marienberg Castle, the Residenz Palace (UNESCO), St. Kilian’s Cathedral, and the old stone bridge over the Main River. We will then depart for the enchanting city of Bamberg, the “Rome of Franconia.” We will admire the Old Town Hall on the Pegnitz River bridge, the Cathedral, and the Neue Residenz Palace, where Otto and Amalia lived. Arrival in Nuremberg in the afternoon and check-in at the hotel.
A hearty breakfast and a visit to Nuremberg’s Old Town, surrounded by medieval walls. We’ll see the Main Square, City Hall, and the Cathedral. If you wish, an optional excursion to medieval Bamberg follows, where you can explore the canals of “Little Venice” and sample the famous smoked beer (Rauchbier). Return to Nuremberg.
We set off for the most beautiful section of the Romantic Road. Our first stop is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of Germany’s most picturesque medieval towns. We continue to Dinkelsbühl, a fortified town that escaped the Thirty Years’ War. Our final stop is Augsburg, an ancient Roman city, where we’ll see City Hall and Maximilianstrasse. Arrival in Munich early in the evening. We will celebrate New Year’s Eve in the central square with music and fireworks.
Breakfast and a guided tour of Munich. We’ll walk through Marienplatz, see the New Town Hall with its clock, St. Peter’s Church, and the Opera House. We’ll cross Maximilianstrasse and end up at the historic Hofbräuhaus beer hall. Free time in the afternoon, and you can optionally visit the BMW Museum.
Optional excursion to the fairytale-like Neuschwanstein Castle, a source of inspiration for Disney. Next, we visit Oberammergau with its colorful houses and the famous Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski resort in the Alps. Next, a visit to Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, to see the Golden Roof and the Hofburg Palace. Return to Munich.
Departure for Salzburg, Austria, Mozart’s birthplace. We will stroll down Getreidegasse, visit Mirabell Palace, and see the Cathedral. Free time to visit Hohensalzburg Fortress. In the afternoon, departure for Munich Airport and return flight.
