Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1First impression of the city

Flight to Madrid. Upon arrival, we head straight out for a first glimpse of the city on a panoramic bus tour. With photo stops at landmarks such as Plaza Castilla with its twin curved towers (Puerta de Europa), Madrid’s bullring (Plaza de Toros Las Ventas)—the largest in the country— as well as a stroll through the city’s largest green space, Retiro Park, where we’ll see the artificial lake and the Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal). Next, we head to Atocha Station. Atocha Station is the largest railway station in Madrid; this is where the high-speed AVE trains depart for Barcelona, Zaragoza, Seville, Málaga, Valencia, and Alicante. There is a magnificent, lush garden inside the station, which is the reason for our visit. It was inaugurated in 1992 and occupies the section of the old station that was expanded to accommodate the high-speed trains. In the garden, you’ll find 7,000 plants, representing more than 260 species of the plant kingdom! Arrival and check-in at the hotel, a little time to rest, and then we set off for a walk through the historic center: Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and Mercado de San Miguel, followed by free time for dinner.

DAY 2Madrid - Guided Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll walk to the Prado Museum. We’ll pass through Plaza Colón, the Paseo de Recoletos, and Plaza de Cibeles—home to the Bank of Spain and City Hall—and along the Paseo del Prado before arriving at the museum. The Prado Museum is one of the most important art galleries in the world, with a wealth of famous works that would take us days to see, In the 1 hour and 35 minutes allotted for our scheduled guided tour with an official guide, we will mainly enjoy works from the Spanish School by El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya, as well as some paintings from the Venetian School, such as those by Tintoretto, or the Flemish School, such as those by Rubens. Here, too, we will have an hour of free time so you can view other works or visit the museum shop. Next, we’ll walk through Bourbon Madrid with its large open spaces—squares, boulevards, etc.— specifically along the Paseo del Prado, also known as the Avenue of the Arts, to Habsburg Madrid with its many narrow streets, and we’ll pass through the Barrio de las Letras neighborhood. From there on, you’ll be free to “get lost” in these narrow streets, try a chocolate con churros at the San Ginés Chocolateria, or head to Cava Baja Street in the La Latina neighborhood with its many tapas bars. Later in the afternoon, we recommend visiting the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, specifically the second floor where the permanent exhibition is located. There you’ll have the chance to admire some of the most famous works by Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, and of course the masterpiece of world art, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, as well as other well-known works by the artist.

DAY 3A Trip to Toledo: The City of Three Cultures

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll depart for Toledo, the former capital of Spain. Upon arrival, we’ll take a panoramic bus tour around the city and stop at a vantage point to take photos, where Toledo will appear before us like a bride displaying her wedding. Next, we will head to the annex of the Damascenos and Spathis workshop, i.e., the two most characteristic examples of Toledan art. Afterward, we will begin to walk from one end of the old city to the other. We will stop to visit the vestibule of the Church of St. Thomas, where El Greco’s masterpiece, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, is located. Then we’ll visit the most beautiful cathedral in Western Europe, the Cathedral of Toledo. In addition to the cathedral, we’ll also see works by El Greco, who lived and flourished in Toledo—and much more… Later, free time and return to Madrid. For the evening, to round off your trip to Madrid in style, we recommend a Flamenco show!!!

DAY 4Day off - Optional excursion to medieval Segovia

Today we have our optional excursion to medieval Segovia, where we’ll stroll through the streets and see the 2,000-year-old Roman Aqueduct, the Plaza Mayor, the Alcázar de Segovia castle-palace, and have the chance to sample local dishes at restaurants, dishes such as cochinillo (suckling pig) or try the local dessert Ponche Segoviano. Return to Madrid in the afternoon. *A minimum of 15 participants is required for the tour to take place, and the cost per person is €50.

DAY 5Return Flight

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll head to Madrid Airport, your mind filled with beautiful memories and experiences from your trip. Board your return flight and depart for Thessaloniki, with your memories accompanying you and the promise of your next trip.
