Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1December 10 | Departure for Madeira – Funchal – City tour – Visit to Monte

The adventure begins early in the morning at the airport, where we meet up for the first time, check our luggage, and get to know each other before we even board the plane. After the flight, with a layover in Lisbon, we land in Madeira, where the green of the mountains meets the blue of the Atlantic, and we head straight to Funchal to discover its hidden gems. We’ll stroll through the historic center, lose ourselves in the colors and aromas of the Mercado dos Lavradores market, and take photos on Santa Maria Street with its famous painted doors. The atmosphere here is unique, and you’ll feel it from the very first moment. Next, we’ll take it to the next level—literally—by taking the cable car up to Monte Hill. The view of the city and the ocean as you ascend is simply breathtaking. There, we’ll wander through the Monte Palace gardens, which resemble a tropical paradise. For the return trip, however, we’ll skip the usual modes of transportation. We’ll hop aboard the traditional wooden toboggans (toboggans), and the carreiros, in their distinctive uniforms and straw hats, will guide us down the slopes in a way you won’t find anywhere else in the world. We’ll head to the hotel to check in and settle in, and in the evening, you can relax with a glass of local Madeira wine!

DAY 2December 11 | Funchal – Ribeiro Frio – Santana – Porto da Cruz – Ponta de São Lourenço

Today, after breakfast, we’ll explore the eastern side of the island. Our first stop is Ribeiro Frio, a lush green area where we’ll have time for a short walk through nature, and you’ll have the chance to admire the lush Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll continue on to picturesque Santana, known for its traditional, colorful houses with thatched roofs. Here, you’ll have time to relax, take photos, and enjoy a meal. Next stop: the seaside town of Porto da Cruz, with its breathtaking views of the Atlantic. Before returning to Funchal, we’ll be sure to visit Ponta de São Lourenço, at the easternmost point of Madeira, with its rugged volcanic landscapes.

DAY 3December 12 | Funchal - Hike to Pico do Arieiro - Whale and dolphin watching

We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast and set out early for one of Madeira’s most impressive experiences, as today we’ll take an optional hike to Pico do Arieiro. At an elevation of 1,818 meters, we’ll explore one of the island’s most famous trails. You’ll enjoy unique landscapes, ridgelines, and breathtaking panoramic views. Alternatively, you can opt for a boat trip out into the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll go on a marine life “safari,” searching for whales and dolphins playing in the crystal-clear waters against the backdrop of Madeira’s rugged coastline. Of course, if neither of those is your style, you can simply enjoy your free time in Funchal, do some shopping, or relax with a coffee by the water. Whatever you choose, the day is sure to be full of beautiful sights!

DAY 4December 13 | Funchal – Câmara de Lobos – Cabo Girão – Porto Moniz – Paul da Serra

As soon as you’ve had breakfast, we’ll set off for the western side of Madeira. Our first stop is the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, with its picturesque harbor and the local drink poncha—a mixture of sugarcane raki, honey, and lemon or orange. We’ll continue on to the famous Cabo Girão, one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs, where you’ll walk along the glass skywalk and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views. Our final stop is Porto Moniz, known for its natural volcanic pools. Here you’ll have time to stroll, grab a bite to eat, and maybe take a dip in the Atlantic. On our way back to Funchal, we’ll pass through the Paulo de Serra Plateau.

DAY 5December 14 | Departure for Porto - City tour - Lisbon

In the morning, we depart for colorful Porto. We’ll land and begin our tour of Portugal’s second-largest city, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll see, among other sights, the Clérigos Tower, the central Avenida dos Aliados, Praça da República, the impressive São Bento Station, and the Cathedral. After the tour, you’ll have free time for lunch, shopping, and exploring. Then, we’ll set off by car for one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Lisbon.

DAY 6December 15 | Lisbon - City Tour - Alfama Neighborhood

You’ll have breakfast, and then we’ll set off on a tour of Portugal’s capital. You’ll see, among other sights, the Park of the Nations, Marques de Pombal Square, the Santa Justa Elevator, and the impressive Commerce Square. We’ll continue on to the Belém district, home to the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries—some of Lisbon’s most historic landmarks. You’ll have free time to eat and explore the city. In the afternoon, you can take a walk through Lisbon’s most beautiful and traditional neighborhood, Alfama, with its cobblestone alleys, small squares, and colorful houses. There you’ll also see the Castle of St. George, which looks like something straight out of a period film.

DAY 7December 16 | Lisbon - Sintra - Campo da Roca - Cascais - Estoril

After breakfast, we’ll go on our optional day trip. We’ll start with Sintra, a small town that looks like something out of a fairy tale and was once the summer retreat of kings. Here you’ll see the Palácio Nacional de Sintra and stroll through the town’s narrow streets. We continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Europe and an ideal spot for photos, with breathtaking views. The day continues with stops in Cascais and Estoril, two seaside towns once frequented by the European elite. Perfect for a leisurely stroll by the sea, a quick coffee, or a stop outside the famous Estoril Casino. If you don’t want to join the tour, you’re free to explore Lisbon as you wish.

DAY 8December 17 | Lisbon - Return flight

We have breakfast and head to the airport, since we’re flying to Greece today. Filled with moments and experiences that can’t be captured in photos—and perhaps with a small bottle of port as a souvenir—we board our return flight to Athens.
