An island that combines exotic beaches, traditional villages, cultural heritage, and breathtaking natural beauty. Our journey begins in the town of Lefkada, with its picturesque alleys, colorful Ionian-style houses, and the historic castle of Agia Mavra. We won’t miss cosmopolitan Nydri, the starting point for mini-cruises to the Ionian Princes’ Islands, such as Madouri and Onassis’s Scorpios. Of course, we couldn’t miss a stop at the island’s famous beaches with their crystal-clear waters and impressive cliffs, reminiscent of the Caribbean. Lefkada is also ideal for culinary delights: local specialties, fresh seafood, and exceptional wines round out an authentic island experience.

Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1THESSALONIKI - ZALOGGO - PREVEZA - LEFKADA

Meet at our offices at 6:15 a.m.; departure via the Egnatia Highway toward Zalongo. This is the site of the sacrifice of the women of Souli, who in 1803 chose to die rather than surrender to Ali Pasha. On the cliff above stands an imposing monument depicting the women, a work by sculptor G. Zongolopoulos. To reach the top, we’ll pass by the Monastery of St. Demetrius (18th century). On the southern slope of the mountain, we’ll see the ruins of the ancient city of Cassiopeia, dating to the 4th century B.C. It is one of the very few where the urban layout has been well preserved. Further south, on the side facing the Ambracian Gulf (an important wetland), we will visit the great Roman city of Epirus, Nikopolis (31 B.C.), with its large aqueduct, a theater that is still in use today, and the new museum. Surrounded by water, where the Ionian Sea meets the Ambracian Gulf, Preveza—our next stop—offers plenty of opportunities for exploration, swimming, and good food. It is famous for its fish and seafood, and its monuments, which bear witness to its rich history, are also noteworthy. In the historic center, with its narrow alleys and preserved buildings, we’ll have some free time. We’ll continue on to the jewel of the Ionian Sea, Lefkada, which takes its name from “Cape Lefkata” or “Kavos tis Kyras,” located at the southernmost tip of the island. In ancient times, the cape was called “Leukas Petra” or “Leukas Akra.” Lefkada, like the other Ionian Islands, boasts a rich culture with diverse traditions and customs that reflect a history spanning hundreds of years. A city that shares the same beautiful Ionian setting as the other islands, but with a significant comparative advantage, as it is accessible by road from neighboring Aetolia-Acarnania and the island does not face the challenges of coastal shipping. Check-in at the hotel and a stroll to get a first impression of the town during an afternoon tour. Stroll along the waterfront, followed by free time to wander through the narrow streets and visit the central square.

DAY 2LEFKADA - WEST SIDE - AGIOS NIKITAS - KATHISMA - EXANTHIA

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll have time to visit the island’s patron saint, Kyra Faneromeni, and then set out on a lovely excursion to the western side of the island. A route that reveals the paleontological “cosmogony” of western Lefkada, the prehistory of the formidable landslides that formed the sheer cliffs, the bottomless, deep-blue vastness of the Ionian Sea, as well as the island’s most beautiful and worldfamous beaches. Along the way, we’ll stop at the village of Agios Nikitas, which has been designated a traditional settlement. The sea stretching out before it is crystal clear, offering a view of the beautiful village. A village that offers the sea, good food, and entertainment. After stopping for coffee, a swim, and some rest, we’ll continue on until we reach the village of Exanthia. Its houses are built in an amphitheater-like arrangement, and it is believed that this site has been inhabited since the Byzantine era. We’ll make a stop to walk up to the old church of Agios Stefanos, with its interesting exterior bell tower and courtyard that offers every visitor a wonderful view. The church has been damaged by earthquakes and has been rebuilt. The iconostasis bears the date 1850. We’ll return to the hotel for a little rest and a beautiful summer evening on the emerald island of the Ionian Sea.

DAY 3LEFKADA - NYDRI - CRUISE - PORTO KATZIKI - KEFALONIA - ITHACA - SKORPIOS

Breakfast and departure from the hotel to explore the eastern side of the island. Following the road south, along the island’s eastern coast, we pass through Lygia and Nikiana, eventually arriving at the island’s most popular tourist resort, Nydri. Nydri embodies the very essence of what Lefkada has to offer in terms of cosmopolitan charm. With its island charm, excellent tourist infrastructure, and attractions for both nature lovers and history buffs, it’s one of those destinations that has something for everyone. You can stay in Nydri or join us on an optional cruise to the most beautiful islands of the Ionian Sea. Our first stop will be at Porto Katsiki for a swim at the most beautiful beach on Lefkada. Next stop is the cosmopolitan town of Fiskardo on Kefalonia, where we’ll have time for coffee. We’ll then head to Kioni on Ithaca for a one-hour stop to explore the picturesque area of Odysseus’s island. On the return trip, we’ll have the pleasure of seeing Skorpidi, Papanikolis Cave, Meganisi, and Madouri, and enjoy our afternoon swim at Skorpio. Return to our hotel in Lefkada.

DAY 4PARGA - SYVOTA - METSOVO - RETURN

It’s the last day of our trip, but we’re not done yet… we still have plenty of wonderful things to see. After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll set out to visit the castle of Parga. From above, it overlooks and adorns Parga, offering a breathtaking view of Parga’s harbor and the small island of Panagia across the way. As you walk through the vaulted corridors, the bastions, and the gun rooms, you’ll hear its turbulent history: It was built in the 14th century by the Normans, later destroyed by the Ottomans, in 1572 it was rebuilt by the Venetians and “renovated” in 1814, when it passed into the hands of Ali Pasha. We continue on through Sivota, one of the main seaside resorts in Epirus, which attracts large numbers of tourists during the summer season. The town is built on a small bay dotted with various islets, beaches with crystal-clear waters and lush greenery stretching all the way to the sea, making it a location of rare natural beauty. Our final stop on this excursion is the famous Metsovo, known for its picturesque charm and wonderful little taverns serving local specialties. We’ll have some free time, and then, taking the Egnatia Highway, we’ll arrive back in our city late at night.
