The Tymfristos Tunnel serves as a gateway through time. On one side lies Fthiotida, with its highways and the hustle and bustle of city life. On the other, Evrytania, Greece’s most mountainous prefecture, where snow covers the peaks of Velouchi, and villages cling to rocky slopes like eagles’ nests.

We’ll be captivated by Karpenisi, perched at 960 meters and surrounded by fir trees, which offers visitors scenes of unparalleled, authentic natural beauty. The landscape is so unbelievably beautiful that visitors will find themselves stopping many times to admire it.

Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1Thessaloniki - Ypati - Agathona Monastery - Karpenisi

We’ll meet and depart from our offices at 6:30 a.m. for Karpenisi. With a few stops along the way, we’ll arrive at the Holy Monastery of Agathonos near Ypati. A unique monastery: Tradition holds that the old monastery, where Saint Agathonos lived as a hermit and which was located on the border between the neighboring villages of Lichnos and Kastania, sank into the ground, causing the icon of the Virgin Mary to disappear, only to be found in a light-filled cave—and there, near its current location, the imposing monastery was built. Pheasants, pheasants, partridges, and ducks make up today’s enchanting landscape, which, together with the deer and wild sheep, bears witness to the past, the present, and the life that continues… Our next stop is Ypati. When you arrive, you’ll be enchanted by the natural beauty, the Byzantine churches, the fountains, the flowing waters, the waterfalls, and the Park of Heroes with its busts—all are there to remind you that this place, among other things, is a land of heroes! Arrival in Karpenisi, check-in at our hotel, and rest. In the evening, we’ll watch the Epitaph procession in the central square, just a few meters from our hotel.

DAY 2Lake Kremasta - Panagia Tatarna - Karpenisi

We’ll set out after breakfast for the beautiful Lake Kremasta to visit the lovely Monastery of Panagia Tatarnas. The route is unique. Nature will more than make up for the 60 kilometers we’ll travel before reaching Lake Kremasta. We’ll be amazed by the beauty of the lake, the landscape, and the monastery. We’ll learn about its history, pay our respects, and visit the monastery’s exceptional ecclesiastical museum, where we’ll be given a guided tour. They usually treat us to a cup of coffee and Turkish delight. After enjoying the beauty of the area, we’ll head back to Karpenisi, where there are plenty of places to eat and where we’ll have the chance to get to know this beautiful mountain town well. We’ll also visit the Church of the Holy Trinity, located in Karpenisi’s central square. Of course, we can shop for local products, ranging from meat and traditional sweets to handmade wooden crafts. In the afternoon, we’ll return to the hotel and have some time to rest. In the evening, we’ll head to the Metropolitan Cathedral to experience the solemn atmosphere of the Resurrection. Overnight stay.

DAY 3Karpenisi - Panagia Prousiotissa - Megalo Chorio - Mikro Chorio - Koryschades

After breakfast, we set off for Kefalovryso. Picturesque trails through the trees, wooden bridges overlooking the river, and walks through rushing waters and ancient trees— a truly enchanting place that nevertheless possesses a historical significance, as evidenced by the monument to Markos Botsaris there, since the battle took place at this very spot on August 8, 1823. Next, our magnificent route takes us to the spot where we’ll see the footsteps of the Virgin Mary carved into the rock. Upon arriving at the holy monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa, we’ll have time to pray, collect holy water, visit the small museum housing Karaiskakis’s chariots, and then we’ll head to Megalo Chorio, where we can shop for amazing traditional products such as sweets, eggs, noodles, and even meat. We’ll continue on to Mikro Chorio, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the prefecture. It consists of Old and New Mikro Chorio, situated within a landscape of incredible mountainous beauty, at the point where the Velouchi, Kaliakouda, and Chelidona. Paleo Mikro Chorio is situated at an elevation of 900 meters, 13 kilometers from Karpenisi and 3 kilometers from Neo Mikro Chorio, where we’ll stop for a home-cooked lunch. We’ll continue on to Koryschades, nestled in a breathtaking landscape surrounded by fir forests. A highlight of the village is the Museum of the National Resistance, where the National Council of Free Greece convened on May 14, 1944. It is housed in the Municipal School building, which was built in 1901. Particularly impressive are the old mansions that have been preserved in the municipality and the Church of Saint Athanasios, which dates back to 1865. Return to Karpenisi.

DAY 4Karpenisi - Gorgopotamos - Thessaloniki

Breakfast and departure for the historic Gorgopotamos Bridge, which spans the village of Gorgopotamos and connects the two slopes of Mount Oiti. Even today, the main Athens–Thessaloniki railway line runs across it. On November 25, 1942, resistance organizations, together with British saboteurs, following a decision by the Allied Middle East Command, blew up the bridge, causing a major delay in the German advance, thus writing one of the most glorious chapters in our modern history, with stops along the way and arrival in Thessaloniki late in the afternoon.

Notes: The 3-day tour does not include the second day.
