Thessaloniki "Macedonia" Airport (Google Maps)
We depart early in the morning and, via the Egnatia Highway, pass through Veroia, Kozani, and Kastoria on our way to Krystallopigi. After clearing border formalities and passing along the shores of Lake Ohrid with its crystal-clear waters and rich wildlife, we continue through Pogradec and reach the border with Montenegro. Crossing this small country, we arrive in Trebinje, “the city of the sun and plane trees” as it has been described. A stroll through the old town with its picturesque alleys will impress you. Wander through its alleys, capture the river in photos, and walk across its imposing bridge. Dinner at the hotel and overnight stay.
We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast at the hotel and spend the entire day in Dubrovnik because it’s truly worth it. We begin our tour of the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated as a monument of natural beauty and cultural heritage, preserved for over 1,300 years and surrounded by sturdy, well-preserved walls. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, known for its remarkable monuments and magnificent walls, and one of the most important tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. We’ll start with a panoramic bus tour and stop at an elevated spot with an excellent view of the old town and the islands off the coast. A visit to the old town of Dubrovnik, surrounded by 10th-century walls, is a must, where we’ll walk through the locations where scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed. In the historic city center, we’ll visit the Franciscan Monastery, the Cathedral of the Rectors, the Old Port, and the Church of St. Blaise, the city’s patron saint—sights that offer a rare travel experience. We will continue with a visit to the nearby islet of Lokrum. The city’s residents visit the “car-free island” because it offers a peaceful escape from the city. A beautiful setting with botanical gardens, exotic trees, flowers, rabbits, peacocks, and a medieval Benedictine monastery. If you wish, you can take a dip in the island’s crystal-clear waters. On the way back, we’ll enjoy the magnificent view of the old town walls from the boat. We also recommend taking the cable car (Dubrovnik Cable Car) to the top of Srdj, where you can see the entire old town, the Adriatic Sea, and its islands. The view is breathtaking, and—if it’s not too windy—you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee with Dubrovnik at your feet. In the city center and the old town, there’s a cheerful summer atmosphere. Enjoy a good restaurant or a coffee with an unobstructed view. It’s also a good idea to visit the wine festival or the aquarium located within the walls of the medieval castle of St. John (St. Ivan). Of course, the beach is waiting for you to take a dip! Late in the afternoon, we return to the hotel where dinner awaits us.
We have breakfast at the hotel and set off on a wonderful drive along the winding Dalmatian coast to first visit picturesque Split, the largest city in Dalmatia. The highlight of the Split tour is the famous Palace of Emperor Diocletian, the most significant and best-preserved Roman building in Croatia. We will see the monumental peristyle, Diocletian’s Mausoleum (now St. Domnius Cathedral), the Gothic City Hall, and the Renaissance Clock Tower. Free time on the city’s beautiful waterfront, the famous Riva. Just 35 km away lies the medieval town of Trogir (a city-island-museum), once the Greek colony of Tragurion, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. We’ll see the beautiful Cathedral of St. Lawrence with the incredibly beautiful Radovan Gate. We’ll continue on to Zadar, a beautiful coastal city with a rich history. We’ll check into the hotel, and then you’ll have time for a nice stroll along the cosmopolitan beach.
We enjoy a hearty breakfast at the hotel, and after a brief tour of Zadar, we set off for a true wonder of nature: Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a natural complex of 16 lakes connected by a series of waterfalls. We then head to the capital of Slovenia, the picturesque Ljubljana. We will tour along the Ljubljanica River, see the three bridges, City Hall, Ljubljana Castle, St. Nicholas Cathedral, and Congress Square. We will then check in at the luxurious DoubleTree by Hilton hotel near the city center.
Enjoy the beautiful city of Ljubljana on your own, or join us on another wonderful optional day trip. Our first stop is the famous Postojna Caves, among the largest in Europe. Our next stop is Trieste, the “Lady of Italy.” We’ll admire Piazza dell’Unità, the Roman Amphitheater, the Gothic City Hall, and the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas. Free time in Borgo Teresiano. Our next and final stop is the famous Opatija, built on the Istrian peninsula and surrounded by gardens of oleanders. We will enjoy the luxurious mansions of the Habsburg dynasty and the cosmopolitan beach. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for beautiful Belgrade. We’ll start at Kalemegdan Fortress, at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. We’ll see Nebojša Tower, Republic Square, the National Theater, and St. Sava, the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans. We’ll also see the Tito Memorial Complex, City Hall, and the Parliament. Free time on the pedestrian street of Knez Mihailova. In the evening, a visit to the famous Skadarlija is a must—the city’s bohemian quarter with its traditional restaurants and musicians.
Breakfast and time for one last stroll through the "White City." We head back to our hometown, our minds filled with memories and experiences from this wonderful journey.
