Thessaloniki "Macedonia" Airport (Google Maps)
We’ll meet at MAKEDONIA Airport at 7:40 a.m. and board the flight to the capital of Hungary. We arrive in the famous capital and, without wasting any time, begin our city tour. We’ll see Heroes’ Square with the Millennium Monument, the Zoo, the Széchenyi Baths, the city’s permanent circus, Andrássy Avenue with its well-preserved buildings, the Opera House, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Academy of Sciences, and we’ll leave behind the cultural heart of Budapest’s upper class, crossing over to Buda via the Lions’ Bridge, where Fishermen’s Hill is located. At the center of the hill, with the Habsburg Royal Palace—a castle-city dating from the 17th century—lies Holy Trinity Square. There, the Church of the Virgin Mary, known as St. Matthias Church, which was founded in 1250, stands out. We’ll end up at the central market on Váci Utca. Afterward, we’ll transfer to the hotel and check in. For the evening, we recommend a nighttime stroll or a cruise on the Danube, where you can admire the sights illuminated by the city lights. Among them stands the majestic Parliament Building, which is 268 meters long and 123 meters wide. It is one of the oldest parliamentary buildings in Europe. Afterward, return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
Breakfast at our hotel, and today we’ll explore the city with the help of our experienced guide to discover the hidden gems of this magical city. We’ll head to City Park (Varosliget) in Hungarian, a favorite destination for both locals and visitors to Budapest, thanks to the many points of interest you’ll find there. Various museums, the Zoo, Vajdahunyad Castle, the famous Széchenyi Thermal Baths, Heroes’ Square, and many other attractions—all of which, combined with the lush green landscape, make a visit here a must. Next, we’ll board Budapest’s first metro line, which began operating in 1896, and head to the famous Budapest Covered Market. Afterward, we’ll have free time on the central pedestrian street, Vatci Utca, to do some souvenir shopping and have dinner at one of the famous Hungarian restaurants. In the evening, join us (optional) for one of the highlights of the trip: a unique dinner at a traditional Hungarian tavern, where spicy goulash and Gypsy fiddles will enchant you.
The third day of the tour is yours to enjoy however you like; we suggest:
Join us on a fantastic optional excursion to the Hungarian countryside. There are many beautiful places outside of Budapest as well. The most famous excursion is today’s trip to Hungary’s renowned villages along the Danube. On the beautiful route along the Danube, we’ll first stop at the picturesque village of St. Andrew, home to many famous artists. We’ll continue on to Visegrád, the birthplace of Charlemagne. Next is the first capital of the Hungarians, Esztergom, with its enormous cathedral, home to the Hungarian religious treasure. At noon, we return to Budapest so you’ll have extra time to visit any sites you’d like. We recommend visiting the Parliament Building. It is an imposing structure on the banks of the Danube. It’s worth admiring both during the day, to see its grandeur and magnificent architecture, and at night, for its stunning illumination. Its reflection in the river is particularly enchanting. The best photos are taken from Buda, but it’s also nice to go to the front side and admire it up close. The three imposing halls are open to visitors, and you can take a guided tour using headphones. From there, you can also visit the covered market, which is full of traditional products.
Alternatively, visit one of the following:
Vajdahunyad Castle: one of the 10 most impressive castles in Europe! Built in 1896, it showcases the country’s architectural evolution over the centuries. It hosts various festivals, concerts, and exhibitions and is listed among Europe’s Top 10 winter destinations according to Lonely Planet.
Budapest Zoo: It’s rare to find a zoo in the center of a city, but here it’s a reality. It is the oldest zoo in Hungary and one of the oldest in the world, home to 1,072 species.
Széchenyi Budapest Spa: You’ve probably heard that when you’re in Budapest, you have to visit a spa! This is the largest medical spa in Europe, featuring 18 indoor heated pools, steam rooms, saunas, and a large outdoor pool for the more adventurous. The water is supplied by two thermal springs, with temperatures of 74 and 77 °C.
Today, we’ve organized a wonderful optional excursion to the Austrian capital, Vienna. On our tour, we’ll see the Kunsthaus, a complex of buildings in the abstract style, and the Baroque Belvedere Palace complex of Prince Eugene of Savoy, now a museum housing works by modern artists and those of the Modernist movement. We continue to Charles Square, where the Church of St. Charles Borromeo and the Palace of the Society of Friends of Music are located, and we enter the famous Ringstrasse (the ring road of the historic center). Here we’ll see the State Opera House, the Hofburg’s winter imperial palace complex, the twin museums of Art History and Natural History, the Museum Quarter, the Parliament, the former Imperial Theater across from City Hall, the University, and the Votivkirche (Votive Church). We’ll walk through the historic Greek neighborhood with the Greek Orthodox churches of St. George and the Holy Trinity, and as we make our way on foot through the historic center, with the famous St. Stephen’s Basilica, we’ll end up at City Hall Square. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Budapest.
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll have time for one last stroll through the city before heading to the airport, bidding farewell to Budapest and its romantic atmosphere.
