After breakfast, we’ll begin our tour of Palermo and Monreale, two places that uniquely reflect the multicultural splendor of Sicily. Under the Mediterranean sun, the Arab, Norman, Byzantine, and Italian worlds converge in churches, palaces, markets, and squares, creating a setting that seems to embody all the centuries of the island’s history. Our first stop is Monreale, built on a panoramic hilltop overlooking Palermo. Here stands the famous Cathedral, one of the most important monuments of Norman Sicily and one of Italy’s most impressive religious buildings. The cathedral impresses with its size, its harmony, and above all its magnificent mosaics, in which Byzantine influence meets Norman power and the Eastern decorative tradition. Its interior seems to glow with golden light, reflecting the grandeur of an era when Sicily was a crossroads of civilizations. A visit to Monreale is one of the most memorable cultural highlights of the trip. It is not only the beauty of the mosaics, but also the sense that we are standing before a work that unites East and West, Christian tradition and Byzantine art, Norman power and Mediterranean sensibility. We then return to Palermo for our guided tour of the historic center. The city unfolds before us like a living museum, but also like an everyday scene teeming with life. We’ll see the impressive Cathedral, a monument that encapsulates the city’s tumultuous history, with architectural elements that bear witness to different eras and influences. From there, we’ll head toward Via Vittorio Emanuele, one of Palermo’s historic thoroughfares, and arrive at Quattro Canti, the famous Baroque intersection with its four facades representing the seasons, the Spanish rulers, and the city’s patron saints. A little further on, the Fontana Pretoria impresses with its sculptures and the theatricality of the setting. Palermo’s squares, facades, churches, and palaces create a sense of grandeur, yet at the same time, the city remains vibrant, everyday, and authentic. We’ll also see the exterior of the Teatro Massimo, one of Europe’s largest opera houses and one of the city’s cultural landmarks, as well as the Teatro Politeama, which dominates one of the most distinctive areas of the city center. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to enjoy Palermo at your own pace. It’s worth taking your time to wander around here. Visit a market, try arancini, cannoli, pasta con le sarde, or a local dessert, drink coffee like the locals, stroll through the neighborhoods, and let the city sweep you away. Palermo isn’t just about its monuments. It’s the voices, the scents, the squares, the small shops, the open-air markets, and the feeling that life is happening everywhere—vividly and authentically. In the evening, you can enjoy the city all lit up, sample Sicilian cuisine, or take a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian streets. Palermo at night has its own charm: less “museum-like,” more lively, authentic, and full of people.

We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast at the hotel and set out for one of the most impressive days of the trip, crossing almost the entire length of Sicily from west to east. Along the way, we’ll enjoy an ever-changing landscape of fertile plains, endless vineyards, olive groves, orange groves, and picturesque villages that have preserved their authentic Sicilian character, and as we approach the eastern side of the island, the imposing silhouette of Mount Etna will begin to emerge before us. We’ll arrive at the foothills of Europe’s largest active volcano, the legendary Etna, which towers at an altitude exceeding 3,300 meters and is one of UNESCO’s most important natural monuments. This imposing volcano, which has shaped the landscape and history of Sicily for thousands of years, offers a unique spectacle, as older and newer lava flows create an almost lunar landscape of unique beauty. We’ll take our bus to Rifugio Sapienza (about 1,900 m), the most well-known access point to Mount Etna. Here we’ll have time to walk through the famous Silvestri Craters, formed by the 1892 eruption, enjoy the panoramic view of the eastern Sicilian coast, and photograph the unique volcanic landscape that constantly changes shape following each new volcanic activity. For those who wish, time and weather permitting, there will be the option of an optional ascent by cable car and special 4×4 vehicles to a higher elevation, getting even closer to the active craters and enjoying a truly unforgettable experience at one of the planet’s most impressive geological phenomena. After completing our visit, we continue on to the eastern coast of Sicily and arrive in the elegant city of Catania, the island’s second-largest city, built almost entirely from the distinctive black volcanic rock of Mount Etna. The city, which was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693, is today one of the most important examples of Sicilian Baroque and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Check-in at the hotel and free time for a first stroll through the historic city center, where we’ll experience Catania’s lively atmosphere and enjoy authentic Sicilian hospitality.

After breakfast, we begin our day by exploring the charming city of Catania, Sicily’s second-largest city and one of the most authentic and vibrant cities in southern Italy. Built at the foot of Mount Etna and shaped over the centuries by the volcano’s repeated eruptions, Catania stands out for its imposing Baroque buildings, which are constructed almost entirely of the characteristic black volcanic stone, creating a unique contrast with the white facades of its churches and palaces. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ranks among the most important examples of Sicilian Baroque. Our tour begins at the impressive Piazza Duomo, the heart of the city, where the majestic Cathedral of Saint Agatha, the patron saint of Catania, stands out. In the center of the square stands the famous Elephant Fountain, the city’s timeless symbol, a unique sculpture carved from black volcanic stone that supports an Egyptian obelisk. Next, we’ll visit the elegant Piazza Università and stroll along the impressive Via Etnea, Catania’s most famous shopping street, lined with shops, historic buildings, cafés, and traditional pastry shops, while the imposing sight of Mount Etna dominating the horizon will accompany us every step of the way. After our tour, we’ll have free time to stroll, shop, or enjoy an authentic Italian espresso or some of the famous Sicilian delicacies, such as traditional cannoli, granita, or one of the city’s local specialties. For those interested, we recommend a unique optional excursion to historic Syracuse, one of the most important cities of ancient Magna Graecia, the birthplace of Archimedes, and one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Greek world. Our first stop will be the famous Archaeological Park of Neapolis, where we’ll admire the imposing Greek Theater, one of the largest and best-preserved from antiquity, as well as the mysterious Ear of Dionysius, the impressive carved cave known for its unique acoustics. Next, we’ll head to beautiful Ortigia, the historic and most picturesque part of Syracuse, a small island connected to the rest of the city by bridges. As we stroll through its narrow cobblestone streets, we’ll explore the oldest Doric temple in Sicily, the Temple of Apollo, visit the impressive Piazza Duomo, where the cathedral was built atop the ancient Temple of Athena, and we’ll end up at the legendary Fountain of Arethusa, linked to one of the most beautiful myths in Greek mythology. After completing our visit, we return to Catania, having discovered yet another important chapter in Greek and Mediterranean history. Overnight stay.

Early in the morning, we depart from Catania, with our first destination being the elegant Taormina, the undisputed “jewel” of Sicily and one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. Built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Taureau, on a unique natural balcony overlooking the endless blue of the Ionian Sea, Taormina enchants every visitor with its cosmopolitan atmosphere, picturesque alleys, flower-filled squares, and unparalleled view of the majestic Mount Etna. During our brief but meaningful tour of the city, we’ll stroll along the famous Corso Umberto, the main pedestrian street that runs through the entire historic center, past stately mansions, chic boutiques, traditional shops, and elegant cafés. We’ll end up at the impressive Piazza IX Aprile, Taormina’s most photographed spot, where we’ll enjoy one of Sicily’s most beautiful panoramic views, with the Ionian Sea and the imposing Mount Etna in the background. We then depart for Messina, from where we’ll take the ferry across the historic Strait that separates Sicily from mainland Italy, enjoying the unique view of both coasts during the short sea crossing. Following a scenic route through the lush green landscapes of Calabria and Basilicata, we continue our journey to the enchanting Matera, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of UNESCO’s most important World Heritage Sites. The city, also known as the “Stone City,” impresses with its famous Sassi neighborhoods, where houses, churches, and monasteries are carved directly into the natural rock, creating a setting of unique beauty that seems to have remained unchanged over the centuries. During our tour, we’ll walk along the cobblestone alleys, explore the distinctive cave dwellings, and enjoy the unique scenery that has made Matera one of Europe’s most important film destinations and a European Capital of Culturefor 2019. We’ll also have free time to wander through its picturesque alleys and bid a fitting farewell to Southern Italy. Then we’ll head to the Bari airport, where we’ll board our direct return flight to Thessaloniki. A unique journey comes to an end, having explored some of Southern Italy’s most remarkable destinations—a blend of breathtaking natural landscapes, magnificent monuments, cities steeped in history, and authentic Mediterranean experiences that will stay with us for a long time to come.
