Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1Thessaloniki – Lisbon

Meet at “Macedonia” Airport at 7:30 a.m. and board the Turkish Airlines flight via Istanbul to the Portuguese capital, the seven-hilled city of Lisbon (Lisboa-Lisboa). With its gaze turned toward America and its back to Europe, Lisbon, built along the northern bank of the Tagus River (Rio Tejo), is a modern metropolis of exceptional beauty that retains the atmosphere of its former colonial superpower status. With numerous palaces, monasteries, castles, as well as ultra-modern buildings, and beautiful boulevards, squares, and streets traversed by the characteristic picturesque trams. Lisbon is one of the most interesting and much-sung-about cities in the world. The city in the shadow of its great poet, Fernando Pessoa. Transfer and check-in at the hotel. Walk and first exploration of the city. Overnight stay.

 

DAY 2Lisbon - Getting to Know the City

Today’s tour is dedicated to the city and its landmarks. Leaving our hotel, we will walk down the tree-lined “Avenida da Liberdade” (Avenida da Liberdade), which is lined with some of the most interesting examples of Portuguese architecture. We will continue through the streets of the Lower City (Baixa). Next, we visit the National Museum of Royal Carriages, which houses a collection of royal carriages from the late 15th to the 19th century that is unique in its luxury and richness. This collection is considered the most remarkable of its kind in the world. We continue our journey and head to the Belém district. Our first stop is on the banks of the Tagus River. We will see the Belém Tower (Torre de Belém), the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), as well as the floor map depicting the maritime routes of the Portuguese navigators. Our final stop is the Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), the iconic monument to the power and wealth of colonial Portugal, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here lie the tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poets Luís de Camões and Fernando Pessoa. We recommend trying the famous pasteis de Belem pastries at the historic pastry shop. In the afternoon, visit the castle (Castelo de São Jorge) and wander through Alfama. Overnight stay.

DAY 3Lisbon - Sintra - Cascais - Estoril - Cabo da Roca - Parque das Nações

Early morning departure for a particularly enjoyable excursion to the outskirts of Lisbon. Driving through the streets of cosmopolitan Estoril, we make a brief stop in neighboring Cascais, once a fishing village and now a popular tourist resort. Our next stop is romantic Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its symbol is the Palacio Nacional de Sintra. We will continue with a visit to Cabo da Roca, the cape that marks the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Return to Lisbon and visit to the Parque das Nações, where you will see the modern face of the city, the Vasco da Gama Tower, the bridge, and the famous aquarium (Oceanário de Lisboa). Overnight stay.

DAY 4Lisbon – Óbidos – Nazaré – Batalha – Fátima – Coimbra

Early morning departure for Coimbra. Our first stop is Obidos, a beautiful walled town. Next, we head to Nazaré, one of the most famous tourist resorts on the Silver Coast (Costa da Prata). We continue our journey through the historic region of Batalha, known for its victory over the Castilians. We pass by the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória (UNESCO) and continue on to Fátima. We will visit the Basilica of Fatima and the modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity, designed by architect Alexandros Tombazis. We arrive in Coimbra, built on the Montego River. We will visit the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in the world, and the historic center with the Church of Santa Cruz. Overnight stay.

DAY 5Coimbra – Busaco – Aveiro – Porto

We’ll take a morning stroll through Coimbra and then head to the Serra do Bussaco National Park, which has been designated a National Monument. After admiring the park’s beauty and the luxurious palace-hotel, we head to Aveiro. A city known as the “Venice of Portugal” thanks to its canals and traditional “moliceiros” boats. The final destination of the day is picturesque Porto. Check-in at the hotel and overnight stay.

DAY 6Porto - Guided Tour

Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, is built in an amphitheater-like layout on the banks of the Douro River. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. We will visit the historic center, see the characteristic "barcos rabelos" boats, and the Palácio da Bolsa, the city’s old stock exchange. Optionally, you can enjoy a boat ride on the river and visit a winery to taste the famous Vinho Porto. Overnight stay.

DAY 7Porto – Santiago de Compostela – Santa Luzia – Viana do Castelo – Porto

Today we will cross into neighboring Spain to visit Santiago de Compostela, one of the world’s most important pilgrimage sites. We will explore the city, which marks the end of the Camino de Santiago route. Return to Portugal with stops in Santa Luzia, offering an exceptional view of the ocean, and in the traditional town of Viana do Castelo. Overnight stay in Porto.

DAY 8Porto - Braga - Guimarães - Porto

An introduction to the northern province of Minho. We’ll start at the religious sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, with its monumental staircase. We continue to Braga, the country’s religious capital, and conclude in Guimarães, the “cradle” of the Portuguese nation and its first capital, where we will visit the castle and the palace of the Dukes of Braganza. Overnight stay.

DAY 9Porto - Thessaloniki

Breakfast and departure for the airport. Flight via Istanbul to Thessaloniki.
