Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1DEPARTURE - EPIDAURUS - TOLO

We depart from our offices at 5:00 a.m. Passing through Larissa, Lamia, and Thebes, and making the necessary stops for coffee and meals, we arrive at the Isthmus of Corinth. We’ll stop for photos at the 6-kilometer-long “Canal,” and then we’ll arrive in Epidaurus, the most important ancient site of worship dedicated to the god Asclepius. It became famous throughout Greece for its Asclepieion, one of the most important healing centers of antiquity, and, of course, the ancient theater, a work by the architect Polykleitos, which remains unsurpassed even today in beauty and acoustics. It’s amazing that even an actor’s breath can be heard all the way to the back row. We’ll continue our journey toward the Nafplio area and end up in picturesque Tolo to check into our hotel. In the evening, we’ll enjoy our dinner.

DAY 2DAILY OPTIONAL EXCURSION TO HYDRAS AND SPETSES

We’ll have breakfast and set off on our optional excursion to the two beautiful islands of the Saronic Gulf. Our first stop is cosmopolitan Hydra, the island with a rich maritime tradition and superbly preserved architecture. We’ll visit the Tombazis Mansion [which serves as a branch of the School of Fine Arts],the historic home of Lazaros Kountouriotis, which has served as the National Historical Museum since 2001, the cathedral (17th century) with its marble bell tower, as well as the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra, where visitors are struck by a unique exhibit: the silver lekythos containing the embalmed heart of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis. Free time to wander through the village’s narrow streets and enjoy a coffee at the picturesque harbor. Our next stop is Spetses, another important naval power during the War of Independence of 1821. We’ll visit the house-museum of Bouboulina, the home of the island’s first governor, Hatzigiannis Mexis, Dapia, the old fort-harbor with its heavy cannons and exquisite mosaics made of round pebbles, while a little further on, the iconic Poseidonio building—with its classical architecture—stands imposingly on the waterfront, a landmark of Spetses. If you’d like, you can take a tour of this beautiful island in a horse-drawn carriage. Late in the afternoon, we’ll return to our hotel, and you’ll have free time to wander through the narrow streets of the area.

DAY 3NAUPLIO - CITY TOUR - PALAMIDI - POROS - GALATAS

Breakfast, then departure for a tour of Greece’s beautiful first capital after liberation. Our first stop is Palamidi, the imposing fortress that rises 216 meters above the city of Nafplio, which can be reached by car from the eastern side. The more adventurous and romantic reach the summit via the 999 steps. It was built between 1687 and 1715 by the Venetians after they captured the hill. We’ll have time to take photos and enjoy the magnificent view from above. Next, we’ll head to Nafplio, where we’ll visit Syntagma Square, the Archaeological Museum, and the Church of St. George, which the first king of Greece, Otto, as well as the Church of St. Spyridon, in front of which Kapodistrias was assassinated. We recommend, if you’d like, a ride on the tourist train that operates in Nafplio—a unique way to show visitors around and a fun activity for young and old alike. It departs from the city’s port and is particularly popular with children, but it’s also a great experience for adults, since in just half an hour you can see the city in a unique way. Our next stop will be Poros. Once upon a time, two little islands—Sphaira and Kalavriacame together to create something like… the “Little Venice” of the Saronic Gulf: Poros. It awaits us to discover it and love it as much as Seferis and Henry Miller did. It stands majestically across from Galatas, like a puzzle piece that slipped away from the Peloponnese. The little boats come and go [boarding optional] to bring us here. What’s worth seeing in Poros? The neoclassical houses bathed in light, a stroll through the narrow alleys, through the neighborhoods, and a visit to the Archaeological Museum in Korizi Square to admire artifacts from the Temple of Poseidon, ancient Troizina, and Methana. Free time to explore the beautiful island. Return to the hotel and dinner.

DAY 4NAUPLIO - MYCENAE - RETURN

Breakfast and one last stroll, a coffee with a view of Palamidi, and the spirit of Nafplio accompanying us on our way back—because there are some places you don’t say goodbye to; you take them with you. We then arrive in Mycenae, the “Golden Mycenae,” one of the most famous kingdoms of antiquity. It was the kingdom of the renowned Agamemnon, commander-in-chief of the Trojan War, and one of the largest city-states in the Peloponnese. The Mycenaean walls consist of massive boulders that protected the city from any attack and remain a model of architecture even today. Excavations have unearthed many artifacts, primarily made of gold (a prime example being the “mask of Agamemnon”), which are housed in the museum at the archaeological site as well as in the Archaeological Museum of Athens. We will see the imposing Gate of the Lions and the vaulted tombs of the Atreides. We will then continue on our way back to our city.
