We kick things off in cosmopolitan Casablanca and the elegant capital Rabat, before immersing ourselves in the “holy” city of Fez, where the real flavor comes when you get lost in the souks haggling. Next up is Morocco’s well-hidden “blue pearl,” Chefchaouen, a city where you’ll find yourself surrounded by 50 shades of blue. The heart of the adventure beats in the Sahara Desert (Merzouga), where, after crossing the Atlas Mountains, you’ll camp under the vast African sky like a Bedouin and get your adrenaline pumping with “dune bashing.” Passing through the cinematic town of Ouarzazate, we complete our journey in the heart of Morocco, the mysterious Marrakesh. Today, we leave the everyday behind and fly to North Africa. Upon arriving at the Marrakech airport, we meet our local friend, who will immediately introduce us to the magic of the country. The road trip begins heading north, with our first stop being the legendary Casablanca. The economic heart of Morocco, it is a city brimming with a cosmopolitan vibe. We’ll stop in front of the dazzling Hassan II Mosque, a marvel of modern Islamic architecture, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. It is Casablanca’s top attraction and one of the largest mosques in the world, with a minaret reaching 210 meters. But that’s enough for today. We’re heading to our hotel to rest, as a full day awaits you tomorrow.
Today, after breakfast, we head to the capital, the elegant city of Rabat. This city is the epitome of Moroccan glamour and history. On our guided tour, we will “touch” thousands of years of history. We’ll take photos at the Hassan Tower, an imposing minaret that evokes the grandeur of the 12th century, though it was originally intended to be the largest mosque in the world. Directly across stands the Mausoleum, a brilliant example of modern Moroccan art, where King Mohammed V and his sons are laid to rest. Next up is Chefchaouen, the “Blue Daughter of Andalusia.” Built at the foot of the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen—about a 4-hour drive from Fes—became famous for its blue color, which is found on just about everything. We don’t know about you, but we love it when we go somewhere and don’t have to visit a museum, palace, or art gallery to see something beautiful. And that’s exactly the case here. Chefchaouen seems to have come straight out of a fairy tale, out of a novel. As we mentioned earlier, Chefchaouen is located in the heart of the Atlas Mountains, which means it has plenty of uphill climbs, downhill slopes, and steps. It sounds tiring, but that’s exactly why it offers a breathtaking view of the mountains! Grab a backpack with water, a snack, your sturdiest shoes, and your camera so you’re ready to explore. You’ll have free time to stroll through the narrow streets and souks of this beautiful village. Tonight we’ll be staying here.
Today, our itinerary takes us to Fez, so after breakfast we’ll continue our road trip. This city feels like a journey through time and space. Its medina is the largest in the world, dating back 2,000 years and featuring over 9,000 narrow streets. So be careful… It’s very easy to get lost. If you hear “balak,” step aside! It’ll be one of the donkeys loaded with goods. If you peek into the little shops, you’ll see artisans “toiling” to create intricate handmade crafts. No one can resist the charm of the handmade ceramics and textiles, as well as local delicacies like tagine and couscous. Until the 19th century, the city was the sole source of its traditional hats, the fez, before production began in France and Turkey, as the characteristic red dye used to color them was produced here. Fez was also the terminus of a gold trade route that began in Timbuktu. There in the medina, on one of the rooftops of a leather shop, we’ll see the tanneries—the vats containing the dyes used to color the hides. After first giving us mint leaves for the scent, they’ll explain the leather dyeing process. Next, we’ll head to the Merenid Tombs, which offer a stunning panoramic view of Fes, while our local guide will give us a tour. We’ll be staying here tonight.
Early in the morning, we head toward Merzouga and the Sahara Desert! We’ve traveled all over the world, and we won’t hide the fact that today is one of our favorite experiences. You’ll soon understand why… As soon as we arrive at the meeting point, our Bedouin friends will be waiting for us with their 4×4 jeeps. We hop into the jeeps and head toward the caravan with our camels. To reach the camp where we’ll spend the night, you’ll have to do it like a true Bedouin. So put on your Touareg hat, apply a good dose of sunscreen, and marvel at the golden sand dunes of the world’s most famous desert. As time goes by, it will only get better… The Bedouins will welcome us at the camp, and we’ll settle into our Berber tents. A camp that will… make you rub your eyes in disbelief! Experience the magic of an evening in an authentic Bedouin tent. While dinner is being prepared, relax and enjoy the beauty of the idyllic landscape. In the evening, under the stars, we’ll sit around the fire and enjoy Moroccan food in a traditional setting.
The camp hosts will wake up early those who want to watch the sunrise. After breakfast, put your Tuareg hat back on and hop on a quad bike. It’s time to conquer the golden dunes of the Sahara with an activity you won’t want to end. It’s been the favorite activity of all our travelers so far, and that’s because you feel at one with the grandeur of nature. If you’d rather not go quad biking, you can relax at the camp, from where you’ll depart for the meeting point in a 4×4 jeep. We’re sure the experiences you’ll have in the Sahara will leave a lasting impression on your heart! We board the bus and head to one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, Ouarzazate, where we will spend the night.
Today, we’re crossing the Atlas Mountains via the highest mountain pass in North Africa, the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. A masterpiece of road engineering that rises to 2,260 meters above sea level. Before it was built by the French in 1936, the only way to cross the High Atlas was the route followed by camel caravans, and the route shows just how difficult it was. Lush green landscapes will surround us as we arrive at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting for many Hollywood film productions such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Ait Ben Haddou is one of the most impressive sights in the Valley of the Kasbahs, in the rocky desert of Morocco. The exact date of its construction is unknown, but it is estimated that work began in the 17th century. Its purpose was to serve as a fortified town along the trade route connecting the Sahara with Marrakesh. A picturesque place with small shops, restaurants, and stone houses that will transport you back in time. Next up is Marrakesh, where we will spend the night.
Many people think that Marrakesh is the capital of Morocco, mainly because, for most travelers, it is more popular than Rabat. It is also one of the country’s four imperial cities, a title it has earned. Take a deep breath and get ready for an unforgettable day! We begin our tour at the Majorelle Gardens, which were created by the French painter Louis Majorelle but later taken over by Yves Saint Laurent. They are a haven of relaxation with vibrant colors and exotic plants. An ideal spot for tranquility and photos. We continue to the Koutoubia Mosque, one of Marrakech’s most famous landmarks, where non-Muslims are not permitted to enter. We’ll admire the ancient Bahia Palace, from the time when harems still existed, of course always accompanied by our local friend who will tell you everything you need to know. You’ll have the rest of the day free to wander through the souks of the medina, though you won’t have time to see everything, as there are over 10,000 small shops in the old city of Marrakech. This is where you’ll find Africa’s largest square and market, Djemaa El Fna, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. It’s the best place to show off your haggling skills. And if you’re not good at haggling, this is the best place to learn! Handmade colorful ceramics, clothing, and jewelry are just some of the items you’ll find in these charming shops. We’d recommend trying one of the city’s many Hammams and Spas, where you can unwind and enjoy an authentic Eastern experience that will relax and rejuvenate you.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end… at least for now! The return is inevitable, but it’s just a brief pause until the next journey. From the blue of Chefchaouen to the golden sunset of the Sahara, you’ll have unforgettable experiences and meet friends who might become your future travel companions.
