Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1FLIGHT TO ROME – VATICAN MUSEUMS – ST. PETER’S BASILICA – ROME BY NIGHT

We will meet at "MAKEDONIA" Airport at 7:25 a.m. and depart on a direct flight to the Eternal City. As soon as we arrive, we will board the bus and head to the independent state of Vatican City for a unique guided tour. The Vatican Museums are one of the most important museum complexes in the world, with over 4.3 million visitors annually. Their halls house exhibits from the Roman Catholic Church’s centuries-old and priceless collection, including famous ancient statues and Renaissance masterpieces.

During our tour, we will admire priceless artistic treasures, such as the Gallery of Candlesticks, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Hall of Maps, as well as the impressive rooms decorated by the great Raphael. The highlight of our tour will be the Sistine Chapel, where we will have the opportunity to admire Michelangelo’s breathtaking frescoes, one of the greatest masterpieces of world art. Finally, we will admire St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in Christendom, which stands over the tomb of the Apostle Peter. With a total capacity of 60,000 people and an area that makes it the largest religious building in the world, the cathedral houses unique works of art, such as Michelangelo’s famous “Pietà.” Afterward, we will head to the hotel to check in.

Once darkness falls, we recommend an optional night tour of Rome’s illuminated sights (Roma by Night) to discover the city’s magic in an atmospheric way. To begin, we’ll stroll down the famous Via Veneto, a symbol of Italy’s “Dolce Vita,” known for its elegant cafés and luxury hotels. Next, we’ll admire the Fountain of Triton before heading up to the Quirinal Hill, where the Presidential Palace stands. We’ll head to Piazza Venezia, Rome’s central square, where we’ll see the impressive Monument to the Unification of Italy illuminated. Next, we’ll pass by the Colosseum, the largest Roman amphitheater, which glows impressively under the night lights. Our evening will conclude in the Trastevere neighborhood, one of Rome’s most picturesque and lively areas. Here, you can enjoy a drink along the banks of the Tiber River, in an area brimming with romantic atmosphere and cosmopolitan energy.

DAY 2ROME – CITY TOUR – COLOSSEUM – TREVI FOUNTAIN – SPANISH STEP – VILLA BORGEESE – TIVOLI

In this city, a single day of sightseeing is never enough. After breakfast, we’ll board the bus and head to the historic center of Rome, where we’ll begin our walking tour of the city’s most iconic landmarks. We start at the Colosseum, the symbol of ancient Rome. We’ll explore the history of the ancient amphitheater, which was the center of gladiatorial contests and grand spectacles. Gazing at the imposing arches and the monumental façade, we’ll take an imaginary journey back to the era of gladiators, hearing the roar of the crowds and the intensity of the battles that once filled the arena.

We continue to the Roman Forum, the political, religious, and commercial center of ancient Rome. Amid the ruins of ancient temples, basilicas, and arches, we will discover the stories of the emperors, senators, and ordinary citizens who shaped the empire’s destiny. As we cross the Palatine Hill, we’ll learn more about the lives of the Roman elite, who had their homes in the most sought-after area of ancient Rome. Leaving the ancient world behind, we head to Piazza Venezia, where the impressive Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) stands, dedicated to the first king of unified Italy, Victor Emmanuel II.

At the famous Trevi Fountain, we’ll toss a coin, following the tradition that says this will ensure our return to Rome. Next, we’ll climb the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna, known for the fashion shows and artistic events they host. Next is the Pantheon, a 2,000-year-old temple dedicated to all the gods. It is so well-preserved that it is considered one of the most important architectural masterpieces of the Western world. Next, we’ll see the Palazzo Montecitorio, the Italian Parliament, and the authentic Column of Hadrian. Our tour will conclude at Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most beautiful squares, filled with restaurants and street performers. Here, we will admire the square’s three fountains, with Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers as the highlight. After the tour, you can spend your time as you wish.

Alternatively, you can visit Villa Borghese, one of Rome’s most beautiful parks, covering 800 acres. The park combines Italian and English gardens, lakes, statues, and cultural institutions. On Pincio Hill, you can enjoy the panoramic view of the city from Piazza Napoleone, and then you can walk down to Piazza del Popolo or continue on to Trinità dei Monti, where the historic Casina Valadier café is located. Late in the afternoon, we’ll meet up to return to the hotel. At noon, if you’d like, join us on an optional excursion to beautiful Tivoli, where we’ll explore the famous gardens and Villa d’Este, built in the 16th century, featuring over 100 fountains and unique architecture. We will also visit Villa Adriana, the country residence of Emperor Hadrian, which serves as an open-air museum featuring reconstructions of the emperor’s favorite buildings.

DAY 3ROME - FLORENCE - MESTRE

After breakfast, we depart for Florence, a city that is an open-air museum of the Renaissance, where it is well worth spending the entire day. On our guided tour, we will visit Piazza San Giovanni, dominated by the Baptistery of St. John and the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with Brunelleschi’s famous dome. We continue to Piazza della Signoria, the city’s jewel, where we will admire the Fountain of Neptune and the replica of Michelangelo’s David. In the same square stands the Palazzo Vecchio, which today houses the City Hall, as well as the Loggia dei Lanzi with statues by great Florentine sculptors.

Next, we’ll pass by the famous Uffizi Gallery (exterior visit), the much-photographed Ponte Vecchio, known for its jewelry shops, and Piazza della Repubblica, one of Florence’s most central squares, with its distinctive Arcone arch and the historic Gilli and Paszkowski cafés. You’ll have free time to explore the San Lorenzo market or visit the Palazzo Pitti, the luxurious residence of the Medici family. In the afternoon, we depart for Mestre, where we will check into our hotel rooms.

DAY 4VENICE - ST. MARK'S SQUARE - THE VENETIAN LAGOON - BURANO - MESTRE

Breakfast, and we depart early in the morning to board the boats and visit Venice, a unique and enchanting city, with its 124 islands and 438 bridges that create a setting unlike any other in the world. The city of the great explorer Marco Polo, the Greek-Italian poet Ugo Foscolo, the playwright Carlo Goldoni, the famous Casanova, as well as the great masters of painting—Tintoretto, Bellini, and Titian, and the famous composer Antonio Vivaldi, is historically characterized by its Byzantine presence and its relations with the Arab world.

The significant presence and contribution of the Greek element to the city’s history is marked, among other things, by the historic church of St. George, the Flangineio School, which today houses the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies and the Byzantine Museum. However, the true soul of Venice lies in the city’s architecture. The monumental Piazza San Marco is characterized by its Basilica and the Doge’s Palace with the famous Bridge of Sighs. The bell tower, surrounded by the Old and New Procuratie with the famous Florian and Quadri cafés, lies in the embrace of “the most beautiful drawing room in the world,” according to Napoleon Bonaparte.

We won’t miss the chance to walk to the most beautiful spot on the Grand Canal, in the area where the architectural masterpiece of the Rialto Bridge is located. We’ll end up in the San Polo district and at Campo San Giacomo, an area full of typical Venetian bacari. We’ll tour the Sestiere del Castello area with the Arsenale and its gate featuring the Lion of Piraeus, and continue on to the Sestiere dell’Accademia with its large wooden bridge. Free time to enjoy a Spritz or a gondola ride.

After the tour, we recommend joining us on an optional excursion to the mysterious Venetian lagoon to visit the beautiful, colorful archipelago of Burano. Burano is famous for its lace-making and as the most colorful town in Italy. You’ll be charmed by the many colors of the houses reflected in the lush green waters of the canals and its crooked bell tower. Late in the afternoon, we’ll depart from Venice for our hotel in Mestre.

Next to the Adige River stands the Ponte di Pietra, the city’s oldest bridge.

Our next stop is the enchanting lakeside town of Sirmione. Sirmione is one of the most popular attractions on Lake Garda, featuring the Scaliger Castle at the entrance to the old town, Maria Callas’s villa, and the archaeological site with Catullus’s villa, known as the Grotte. Our final destination is the hotel in Milan.
