Thessaloniki "Macedonia" Airport (Google Maps)
Meet at “MAKEDONIA” Airport on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. and depart on a direct Aegean Airlines flight to Milan. Upon arrival, we will depart for Lake Como. Como is located on the Italian-Swiss border in northern Italy, overlooking the southwestern end of the lake and surrounded by lush green hills, creating a natural landscape of unparalleled beauty. After stopping at the lakeside park to admire the unique scenery—featuring the Volta Museum in ancient Greek style, the Life Electric monument, and Villa Olmo—we’ll head into the city center. There, you’ll find an incredible number of cafes and shops that will make this stroll unforgettable. In Piazza del Duomo, we’ll admire the Cathedral. A visit to Como’s cathedral (Duomo) is definitely one of the best things you can do, as the church features various architectural styles, including Romanesque and Gothic. There you’ll also find the Broletto (Old Town Hall), which once hosted public assemblies. Next, take a stroll to Piazza San Fedele with its 12th-century Romanesque basilica, and lose yourself in the charming narrow streets of the city center.
We then board the bus and depart for cosmopolitan Milan. The city of art and fashion, the metropolis that never ceases to amaze you with its enchanting hidden secrets and its new city growing skyward with skyscrapers resembling hanging gardens, designed with environmentally friendly standards. The capital of Lombardy and Italy’s second-largest city after Rome, it boasts a rich history. From the Sforza Castle in the historic center to the Duomo, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the famous La Scala opera house, another chapter of its long history unfolds. The industrial heart of Italy will enchant even the most discerning visitor with its wonderful evenings in Navigli, the “Little Venice” of nightlife. On the bustling Corso Vittorio Emanuele, you’ll find hundreds of shops and department stores for your shopping. But to enjoy the magnificent view of the Duomo, we recommend the Roof Garden of the luxurious Rinascente department store, with its restaurants and bars. In the afternoon, we will head back to our hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for the enchanting lakeside town of Sirmione. Sirmione is one of the most popular “attractions” on Lake Garda, with thousands of visitors flooding every corner of it daily to see this beautiful, picturesque peninsula. You’ll see pictures of it in every international tourist guide to Lake Garda, featuring the 12th-century Scaliger Castle at the entrance to the old town, Maria Callas’s villa, the Roman palaces, Catullus’s Cave, the thermal springs from the dormant volcano of Mount Baldo, and its unique beaches.
Free time, and then we depart from the city of lovers, Verona. Have you ever visited a place and fallen in love with it at first sight? For us, one of those places is this beautiful city in Veneto. The Centro Storico is the historic center of the city where we’ll see its most famous sights: the Verona Arena, that massive Roman amphitheater, the grand piazzas with their Renaissance palaces and fountains, the towers of the aristocratic families that ruled throughout its long history, and Juliet’s house, the heroine of Shakespeare and this timeless love story. Amid the historic monuments and the bustling cosmopolitan market of the city, the cathedral and the Basilica of Saint Anastasia stand out. Next to the Adige River, which forms a huge S-shape, lies the Ponte Vecchio, the city’s oldest bridge, lined with charming cafes and restaurants perfect for a relaxing break. A trip to the city of love that will be unforgettable. After a full day, we’ll board the bus for our final destination, Mestre, and our hotel.
Breakfast, and we depart early in the morning to board the gondolas and visit Venice, a unique and enchanting city, with its 124 islands and 438 bridges creating a setting unlike any other in the world. The city—of the great explorer Marco Polo (whose 700th anniversary of his death Venice is celebrating this year, 2024), of the Greek-Italian poet Ugo Foscolo, the playwright Carlo Goldoni, the famous lover, adventurer, and writer Casanova, as well as the great masters of painting Tintoretto, Bellini, and Titian, the famous composer Antonio Vivaldi, and many other distinguished Venetians—a city historically characterized by its Byzantine presence and its relations with the Arab world.
The significant presence and contribution of the Greek element to the city’s history is marked, among other things, by the historic church of St. George, the Flangineio School, a Greek school that today houses the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies, and the Byzantine Museum. However, the true soul of Venice lies in the city’s architecture. The monumental Piazza San Marco is characterized by its Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, built entirely of Istrian marble, with the famous Bridge of Sighs. The bell tower, surrounded by the Old and New Procuratie (Commissariates) with the famous Florian Café, dating back to 1720, and the Quadri Café, nestled in the heart of the “Most Beautiful Salon in the World,” as described by the conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte.
We won’t miss the chance to walk to the most beautiful spot on the Grand Canal, with its dozens of Gothic-Venetian palaces, in the area where Antonio dal Ponte’s architectural masterpiece, the Rialto Bridge, is located. We’ll end up in the Sestiere (district) of San Polo and at the spot considered to be the birthplace of Venice, Campo San Giacomo with its namesake church, numerous tourist shops, and many typical Venetian bacari (a type of restaurant-wine bar). The city of the doges awaits to enchant even the most discerning visitor who takes a little time to enjoy an Ombra (glass of wine) with a Cicchetto (appetizer) while relaxing in a beautiful Campo (large square) or Campiello (small square) encountered while strolling through the numerous Calli (narrow streets).
We will tour the Sestiere del Castello district with the famous Serenissima shipyards, known as the Arsenale, and its gate featuring the Lion of Piraeus, and we’ll continue toward St. Mark’s Square, taking a stroll through the area of the major fashion houses’ boutiques toward the Sestiere dell’Accademia with its large wooden bridge over the Grand Canal. Free time to enjoy an aperitif (spritz) or have lunch at one of the many Italian restaurants in this romantic city. Don’t miss a gondola ride, the quintessential Venetian symbol, which you can take from the dozens of spots where gondoliers await visitors.
After your tour, we suggest you join us on an optional excursion to the mysterious Venetian lagoon to visit the beautiful, colorful archipelago of Burano. Burano is a group of three islands located at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon, famous for lace-making and as the most colorful town in Italy. Red and yellow, pink and blue, green and purple: according to legend, it was the fishermen who painted their houses so they could recognize them from afar during their long absences while out fishing. These colors have now become its defining feature and rank this island among the 10 most colorful cities in the world! Anyone who decides to visit the island of Burano will be enchanted by the many colors of the houses and the colorful balconies with flowers reflected in the emerald waters of the canals, by the crooked bell tower, by its tranquility, and by the serenity with which the elderly ladies embroider Burano’s authentic doilies. Late in the afternoon, we will depart from Venice for our hotel in Mestre.
Breakfast and departure for the historic city of Florence, an open-air museum of the Renaissance, where it’s worth spending the entire day. On our panoramic tour, we will see Piazza San Giovanni with the Baptistery of St. John and the Renaissance Cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, with Brunelleschi’s famous dome. Continuing on, we will head down to Piazza della Signoria, which features the Fountain of Neptune and a replica of Michelangelo’s statue of David. Here stands the Palazzo Vecchio, which today houses the City Hall, and the Loggia with statues of great Florentine sculptors. We continue to the famous Uffizi Gallery (exterior visit), the renowned and much-photographed Ponte Vecchio with its countless jewelry shops, and Piazza della Repubblica, one of Florence’s most central squares, with the distinctive Arcone arch and the historic Gilli and Paszkowski cafés. Free time to visit the San Lorenzo Market or the Palazzo Pitti, the luxurious residence of the Medici family. We then board the bus for our transfer and check-in at the hotel in Prato. The rest of the day is free for relaxation or to get a first glimpse of the surrounding area, including nearby Florence.
It’s worth taking advantage of the hotel’s excellent location and enjoying an evening stroll through Florence’s historic center. Wander through the picturesque alleys, cross the famous Ponte Vecchio, where the illuminated windows of the jewelry shops are reflected in the waters of the Arno River, and feel the magic of Piazza della Signoria, which takes on a unique atmosphere at night. Bathed in the soft light of a summer twilight, the city reveals its most romantic and atmospheric side, offering you an unforgettable first evening in the heart of the Renaissance.
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll get ready to visit the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages,” the picturesque town of San Gimignano. Tall, majestic towers welcome us from afar, giving San Gimignano a fairytale appearance. The city of beautiful towers is one of the best-preserved in Tuscany. Rising into the sky are the impressive 13th-century towers; of the 76 that once stood, 14 remain today. Our next stop for today is the city-museum of Siena. The city is divided into seventeen “Contrada” (neighborhoods), each named after an animal or an object. This beautiful provincial town has an aura of a bygone era, thanks entirely to its architecture, which has been preserved intact! In the city center, we’ll have free time to enjoy coffee and lunch, and in the afternoon, enchanted by the sights we’ve visited, we’ll depart for the Eternal City and our hotel for the night.
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll begin our walking tour of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. Starting at the Colosseum, the iconic symbol of ancient Rome, we will explore the history of this ancient amphitheater, which was once the center of gladiatorial contests and grand spectacles. Gazing at its soaring arches and imposing facade, we’ll imagine the roar of the cheering crowds and the clash of swords that once filled the arena.
Next, we’ll pass through the Roman Forum, where the political, religious, and commercial life of ancient Rome unfolded. Amid the ancient temples, basilicas, and arches, we’ll uncover the stories of emperors, senators, and ordinary citizens who shaped the destiny of an empire, and as we pass by the Palatine Hill, we’ll learn about the lavish lifestyle of Rome’s “elite.”
Leaving the ancient world behind, we’ll make our way to Piazza Venezia, a bustling square dominated by the imposing Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland). At the Trevi Fountain, we’ll toss a coin while making a wish—which, according to tradition, will bring us back to Rome—and climb the famous Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna), the setting for renowned fashion shows. Next is one of Rome’s most beautiful and charming sights, the Pantheon, a 2,000-year-old temple dedicated to all the gods, so well-preserved that it is still considered today one of the most important architectural structures in the Western world. Next, we’ll visit the Palazzo Montecitorio, also known as the Roman Parliament, where the original Column of Hadrian stands, and we’ll end up at the charming Piazza Navona, which is filled with restaurants and street artists. This was the site of athletic events during the 1st century AD. In the square, we’ll admire the three fountains, the most impressive being Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers, with each statue representing a river from a different continent. In this stunning square, next to the impressive fountains and the majestic buildings, we recommend enjoying an authentic Italian coffee.
In the afternoon, we’ll return to the hotel. As soon as the sun goes down, we suggest an optional night tour of Rome’s illuminated sights, so you can see the city as it deserves to be seen, with lights and colors that will stay with you forever. We’ll cross Via Veneto with its famous cafés and hotels, a symbol of Italy’s dolce vita, the Triton Fountain, climb one of the seven legendary hills, the Quirinal, where the Presidential Palace stands, and then head to Piazza Venezia, the heart of Rome with its uniquely illuminated Monument to the Unification of Italy. We’ll pass by the largest Roman amphitheater, the illuminated Colosseum, and finally stop in the Trastevere district, one of Rome’s most picturesque and cosmopolitan neighborhoods, for a drink along the banks of the Tiber River.
After breakfast, we’ll board the bus and head to the world’s smallest sovereign state and seat of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican, to visit the largest church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica. In this impressive church, we will see, among other things, Michelangelo’s famous sculpture, the Pietà, the Baldachin or “Portico of Heaven,” Bernini’s work, and the bronze statue of St. Peter by Arnolfo di Cambio from the 3rd century.
After this special visit, we’ll board the bus to head to Fiumicino Airport for our return flight. Through this “journey,” an exceptionally fascinating mosaic of impressions, images, and experiences that will captivate you and surely get you ready for your next trip, with the care of our team that creates journeys and beautiful memories for you.
