Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1THESSALONIKI - SPARTA

We depart from our offices at 6:30 a.m. and, with stops along the way for coffee and a rest, we arrive at the Isthmus of Corinth. We’ll stop for photos and then head to Sparta, the “city of heroes.” Neoclassical buildings, museums, and archaeological sites adorn the capital of the Prefecture of Laconia, where our hotel is located. Check-in at the hotel and free time to explore the city for the first time. Dinner

DAY 2SPARTA - MYSTRAS - KYTHIRA

Breakfast and departure for the castle town of Mystras! It literally “lurks” nearby—it’s very close, almost right next to Sparta—and transports us back to the Byzantine Empire… Stone-paved alleys lined with fortresses, churches, monasteries, palaces, and mansions take us on a journey into the past. A stroll through its stone-paved alleys is a journey through history that we’ll never forget. A visit to the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Demetrius is a must; it was here that Constantine Palaiologos was crowned emperor, the only emperor to be crowned outside of Constantinople. We continue on to the port of Neapolis, Laconia, where we’ll take the ferry to the beautiful island of Kythira. Arrival on the island, check-in at our hotels, dinner.

DAY 3KYTHIRA

Breakfast and departure for the western side of the island, in the Myrtidia area, where one of Kythira’s most important pilgrimage sites is located: the Holy Monastery of Panagia Myrtidiotissa. The icon of Panagia Myrtidiotissa is the island’s most precious relic and is the patroness of all Kythirians. We’ll pay our respects and have some free time to explore the monastery grounds. We’ll then continue on to visit the island’s capital, Chora. We’ll take a stroll through the picturesque narrow streets, lined with mansions and the beautiful homes of the nobility, and visit the Venetian fortress with its breathtaking view of three seas: the Antikythera Sea, the Ionian Sea, and even Crete. We’ll then head to the nearby seaside town of Kapsali. Here, there will be time for swimming and lunch. Return to the hotel and overnight stay.

DAY 4KYTHIRA

Breakfast. Today we’ll continue exploring the rest of the island. Mylopotamos. The square in Mylopotamos, with its arch, the small Fonissa waterfall, and the fairy, and Lagkadi with its watermills, all demonstrate just how generously nature has endowed the village with beauty. Passing through Potamos (the island’s largest village), which was named “The Lady’s Village” when the church of Ilarioitissa was built there to house the icon of the Virgin Mary with the piercing gaze—said to have been brought from Jerusalem. We’ll enjoy a swim and then return to our hotel to rest. In the evening, we can optionally enjoy the entertainment options the island has to offer. Overnight stay.

DAY 5KYTHIRA - NEAPOLIS - NAFPLIO - TOLO

Breakfast. We’ll take in one last look at these unforgettable sights until it’s time to board the ferry to Naples. Our next destination is romantic Nafplio, Greece’s first capital, with its many historical and archaeological monuments. One of the most beautiful cities, Nafplio was, according to mythology, founded by Nauplius, son of Poseidon and Danae’s daughter Amymone, who took part in the Argonautic Expedition and the Trojan War, and where the Franks, Venetians, and Turks all left their mark on the city. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments, statues, Ottoman fountains, Venetian and neoclassical buildings—all charming historical and architectural gems—offer visitors a magnificent welcome. Admire Palamidi, Bourtzi, and Syntagma Square; stroll through Acronauplia and lose yourself in the narrow alleys. Arrival in Tolo, check-in at our hotel, overnight stay.

DAY 6MYKINES - THESSALONIKI

Breakfast and a visit to Mycenae, the “Golden Mycenae,” one of the most famous kingdoms of antiquity. It was the kingdom of the famous Agamemnon, commander-in-chief of the Trojan War, and one of the largest city-states in the Peloponnese. The Mycenaean walls consist of massive boulders that protected the city from any attack and remain a model of architecture even today. Excavations have unearthed many artifacts, primarily made of gold (a prime example being the “mask of Agamemnon”), which are housed in the museum at the archaeological site as well as in the Archaeological Museum of Athens. We will see the imposing Gate of the Lions and the vaulted tombs of the Atreides. We will then continue on our way back to our city.
