Thessaloniki "Macedonia" Airport (Google Maps)
Meet at “Macedonia” Airport early in the morning and take a direct flight to beautiful Krakow. Arrival and departure for a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of Europe’s most significant historical sites, located in the Polish city of Oświęcim, about 60 kilometers northwest of Krakow. It was the largest concentration camp of the Third Reich during World War II. Since 1979, this site has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Accompanied by an experienced guide, we will explore the site’s history through a customized tour, thoughtfully designed so that the whole family can enjoy it. We will then depart for the city of Krakow and have time for a first glimpse of its historic center. We’ll pass through the monumental main square, where we’ll have the chance to see the imposing Basilica Mariacka (St. Mary’s Basilica) and learn the legend behind the melody of the trumpet that echoes throughout the city every hour. We’ll also see the Cloth Hall, Europe’s oldest shopping mall. We’ll have free time to wander around and enjoy the local cuisine. Afterward, we’ll check into our rooms. Our hotel is close to the center, so you can take your first evening stroll through this historic and cosmopolitan city.
Breakfast at our hotel, and our day begins with a stroll through the Jewish quarter (Kazimierz), which is the city’s hippest and most alternative neighborhood. This is where Poland’s oldest Jewish quarter is located, and it was the setting for Steven Spielberg’s famous film “Schindler’s List.” For lovers of antiques and vintage items, the “Antiques Market” is held on certain days, which is the equivalent of London’s Portobello Road Market. The next stops on our tour are the famous “Wawel Castle,” with Krakow’s legendary dragon, and the “Cathedral,” which is an architectural puzzle of different colors, shapes, and styles. Here, you’ll have the chance to take some of the most beautiful photos with views of the city or the castle, perfect for your photo album or social media stories. The next and final stop, the Kraków History Museum, is one of Kraków’s most important museums and offers a comprehensive overview of the city’s history and evolution over the centuries. It is housed in various historic buildings, with the Krzysztofory Palace in the main square as its centerpiece. Through interactive exhibits, everyday objects, works of art, and multimedia, visitors have the opportunity to explore the city’s cultural heritage, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The museum is particularly family-friendly, as it features activities and exhibits that capture children’s interest. We’ll have free time to wander around and enjoy the local cuisine and coffee. In the afternoon, we’ll meet up for anyone who’d like to join us on another lovely excursion starting from the nearby area of Wieliczka, to visit its salt mines, which are a unique treasure in mining history. In the underground galleries, there are churches carved into the salt, small phosphorescent lakes, and wooden pillars supporting the galleries, which are true masterpieces of old-world carpentry and lend the salt mine a charm that has drawn people from all over the world for centuries to admire this unique work of art. It has been under the auspices of UNESCO since 1978. Founded in the 13th century, it is the second-oldest salt mine in Europe. An entire “hidden” underground city stretching 327 meters deep across nine levels. Only three levels are open to the public, which we will visit, covering a distance of about 2 kilometers. We will have the opportunity to admire various works of art and sculptures carved into salt blocks. A particularly impressive part of the salt mines is the “Chapel of Saint Kiga,” a cathedral standing 12 meters tall!
