In the heart of the city, the Christmas markets create a unique festive atmosphere. Wooden huts, handmade ornaments, traditional gifts, Hungarian delicacies, sweets, and warm, aromatic wine come together to create a scene that’s well worth experiencing. The famous Vörösmarty Square becomes a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike, while the entire historic center takes on the warmth of a large Christmas village. And of course, Budapest is more than just its festive atmosphere. It’s a city with a fascinating history and unique architecture, where every corner tells the story of a different era. Hungarian kings, Ottoman conquerors, Habsburg emperors, and the communist era have all left their mark, creating a striking mosaic of cultures and historical influences. We’ll explore the two sides of the city, Buda and Pest, which are connected by the famous bridges over the Danube. We’ll walk across the legendary Chain Bridge, admire the illuminated Parliament Building, stroll through the atmospheric alleys of Buda, and enjoy panoramic views that rank among the most beautiful in Central Europe. And since Budapest is known as one of Europe’s most important spa cities, it’s well worth experiencing its famous thermal baths. The historic Széchenyi Baths are an experience in and of themselves, especially in winter, when the warm waters of the outdoor pools create a unique contrast to the city’s cold. For those seeking even more magic, an evening cruise on the Danube reveals perhaps the most beautiful view of Budapest: the Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and the bridges, all illuminated and reflected in the river’s waters. We’ll meet at “Macedonia” Airport early Sunday morning, December 27, and take a direct flight to enchanting Budapest. Arrival in the Hungarian capital and meeting with our experienced guide, who will introduce us right from the start to the secrets, history, and daily life of the famous “Queen of the Danube.” We’ll begin our exploration of Budapest by focusing our tour on Pest, the lively, cosmopolitan side of the Hungarian capital. We’ll start at the impressive Heroes’ Square, one of the city’s most important squares. Dominating the center is the imposing Millennium Monument, dedicated to Hungary’s history and its most important figures. On either side of the square stand the Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Hall, creating one of Budapest’s most distinctive architectural ensembles. From here, we walk down the famous Andrássy út, the city’s elegant boulevard, with its stately mansions, impressive facades, and luxurious storefronts. Along the way, we’ll spot the imposing Hungarian State Opera House, one of Budapest’s most significant architectural gems. We continue on to the impressive St. Stephen’s Basilica, dedicated to the first king and founder of the Hungarian state. It is one of the largest and most important churches in the country and one of the most iconic landmarks in the city center. From here, we’ll move on to the liveliest part of Pest. We’ll walk along the famous Váci utca, the city’s well-known pedestrian street, and arrive at Vörösmarty tér, which during the Christmas season is one of the hearts of festive Budapest. Wooden huts, traditional Hungarian flavors, mulled wine, handmade ornaments, and festive music create the perfect atmosphere for enjoying the city at a leisurely pace. We’ll have plenty of free time for dining, shopping, and exploring the historic center on our own.
Nighttime cruise on the Danube
In the evening, we recommend you enjoy one of the most beautiful experiences of the entire trip: an optional night cruise on the Danube. When night falls, Budapest reveals perhaps its most beautiful side. The illuminated Parliament Building, Buda Castle, the Fishermen’s Bastion, and the historic bridges are reflected in the river’s waters, creating a unique setting. With a glass of sparkling wine in hand, we enjoy the “Queen of the Danube” from the best possible vantage point. Return to the hotel and overnight stay.
We enjoy a good breakfast at the hotel and continue our tour of Budapest, starting with the historic Buda side of the city. We’ll climb Castle Hill, where Hungary’s political and royal heart has been for centuries. We’ll explore the area around the imposing Buda Castle, the former royal residence that today stands as one of the capital’s most significant architectural complexes and houses, among other attractions, the Hungarian National Gallery. We’ll continue on to the fairy-tale Fishermen’s Bastion, one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Budapest. Its white towers and Neo-Romanesque battlements create a unique setting, but what truly impresses is the view. Before us lies the Danube, the historic bridges connecting the two sides of the city, and directly across the river, the imposing Parliament Building. It is perhaps the most iconic and frequently photographed panorama of the Hungarian capital. Next to it stands the historic Matthias Church, one of the country’s most important churches, closely linked to Hungary’s monarchical history. During our tour, we’ll also enjoy views of the famous bridges connecting Buda and Pest, with the Chain Bridge, of course, standing out as one of the city’s timeless symbols.
Festive City Park
Next, we’ll switch scenes entirely and head to the famous Városliget —Budapest City Park—a vast space of greenery, culture, and recreation that takes on a special atmosphere during the holiday season. Here stands the impressive Vajdahunyad Castle, one of Budapest’s most distinctive architectural creations. Originally built for the 1896 Millennium celebrations, it combines various architectural styles from Hungarian history, from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque. From here on, the day takes a more relaxed turn, and everyone can choose how they’d like to spend their afternoon. Those who love ice skating can visit the famous City Park Ice Rink. The large lake in front of Vajdahunyad is transformed in winter into one of Europe’s most impressive outdoor ice rinks, with the illuminated castle providing the perfect Christmas backdrop. Families can visit the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, one of Europe’s most historic zoos. And of course, there’s perhaps Budapest’s most famous attraction: the Széchenyi Thermal Baths. Indoor and outdoor hot pools, thermal waters, and saunas create a unique experience, especially when the temperature outside is low. You can stay in the area as long as you like and make your own way back to the city center or your hotel. In the evening, join us—if you’d like—for one of the highlights of the trip: a unique dinner at a traditional Hungarian tavern. Flavors of local cuisine, the famous spicy goulash, music, and the characteristic Gypsy fiddles all come together to create an authentic Hungarian evening and a lovely way to round out our busy day.
We’ll enjoy a nice breakfast at the hotel, and today there are two options. You can either spend the day exploring festive Budapest however you like, or join us on an optional excursion to imperial Vienna. Upon arrival in Vienna, we’ll immediately begin our panoramic tour of the Austrian capital. We’ll pass by the unique Hundertwasserhaus, one of the city’s most recognizable contemporary architectural landmarks, and we’ll see the magnificent Baroque Belvedere complex, built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy. We’ll continue on to Karlsplatz, where the impressive Karlskirche stands out, and then we’ll walk along the famous Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard that encircles the historic center and is a veritable open-air museum of architecture. Along the way, we’ll see some of Vienna’s most important buildings: the famous State Opera House, the imperial Hofburg, the imposing Museums of Art History and Natural History, the Parliament, the Burgtheater, City Hall, the University, and the neo-Gothic Votivkirche. We then get off the bus and walk into the heart of old Vienna. Passing through elegant pedestrian streets, historic buildings, and stately facades, we arrive at the imposing St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the city’s timeless symbol. We’ll also pass through the historic Greek quarter, home to the Greek Orthodox churches of St. George and the Holy Trinity, an area inextricably linked to the presence and commercial activity of Greeks in Vienna. And of course, festive Vienna means Christmas markets. The city is transformed during this season: squares filled with illuminated wooden huts, the aromas of Glühwein and Punsch, roasted chestnuts, Austrian sausages, sweets, and Kaiserschmarrn create one of Central Europe’s most iconic Christmas scenes. We’ll have free time in the historic center for dining, coffee, shopping, and, of course, to enjoy the unique festive atmosphere. Late in the afternoon, we’ll meet up and return to the “Queen of the Danube.”
Today is the fourth and final day of the trip, but since our return flight isn’t until late, we have time for one more wonderful day. We’ll also have time in Budapest and take a trip to the famous villages along the Danube on one of Hungary’s most beautiful routes, along the famous Danube Bend. A day filled with small historic towns, castles, traditional architecture, and unique landscapes.
Szentendre
Our first stop is the picturesque town of Szentendre, just a few kilometers north of Budapest. A small, charming town with colorful houses, cobblestone alleys, small squares, and a vibrant artistic atmosphere. The settlement of Serbian and other Balkan populations has left a strong mark on its history and architecture, giving it a unique character that sets it apart from Budapest. We’ll have time to stroll through the picturesque alleys, discover small shops selling handmade items, and sample the famous Hungarian marzipan.
Visegrád
We continue on to historic Visegrád, whose name means “High Castle.” The town was an important royal center during the Middle Ages and is linked to significant moments in Central European history. High above the Danube stands its medieval fortress, from which one can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the river’s famous bend.
Esztergom
Our next stop is historic Esztergom, Hungary’s first capital and, to this day, one of the country’s most important religious centers. Here stands the impressive Esztergom Basilica, Hungary’s largest church, towering majestically over the Danube. From the cathedral grounds, the view of the river and the Mária Valéria Bridge, which connects Hungary with Slovakia, is truly breathtaking.
After completing our excursion, we head back to Budapest. At the scheduled time, we’ll meet up and be transferred to the airport for our return flight. A five-day trip that combines three countries, two of Central Europe’s most beautiful capitals, the traditional villages along the Danube, and some of the most beautiful sights of festive Europe.
