We’ll meet up early in the morning and depart for the Greek-Bulgarian border. After entering Bulgaria and traveling along a scenic route, we’ll reach the Black Sea and the historic town of Nessebar (Mesembria), often referred to as “the pearl of the Black Sea.” We continue on to one of the leading tourist destinations and ports, the Sunny Beach resort. Check-in at the hotel, rest. Overnight stay.
Breakfast at the hotel, and we’ll start our day with a visit to Mesimvria, a city rich in history—a veritable open-air museum—with an abundance of historic buildings, which led UNESCO to include it on the World Heritage List in 1983. It is said to be the city with the highest number of churches per capita. Today, a total of forty churches have survived in the city. We continue our journey and head toward the city of Varna, an important port in the eastern part of the country. It is also known as Bulgaria’s “Maritime Capital” or “Summer Capital.” The city was named Stalin from 1949 to 1956. We will tour the Aladzha Monastery (12th–14th centuries), which is built entirely into the rock and is one of the most frequently visited tourist sites. In the Middle Ages, it was home to ascetics, and today it continues to attract lovers of history and mysticism. In Varna, we’ll visit the Cathedral, the drama theater, and the Aquarium. Free time at the market and the beautiful beach for a meal and a stroll. In the afternoon, we’ll return to our hotel. In the evening, free time to explore the area.
After breakfast, we’ll head to Anghialos. There, we’ll visit the Monastery of St. George, which houses some exceptionally rare icons. We’ll continue on to the city of Burgas, or Pyrgos. It is the second-largest city on the Bulgarian coast and the fourth-largest in Bulgaria, after Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna. It is an important industrial, transportation, cultural, and tourist hub. It is surrounded by the Burgas Lakes, which are home to several hundred species of birds. The Island of Saint Anastasia is part of the city. During our time in the city, we will admire several monuments and attractions, such as the Regional History Museum, the Museum of Nature and Science, the Roman city of Develtum, the Roman and medieval baths of Aqua Calide, the Seaside Casino, and the modern Burgas Opera House, which houses two of the city’s major musical institutions: the State Opera and the Philharmonic. We will also visit the Seaside Garden, a municipal park built in 1910 by the city’s head gardener at the time, as well as several churches and monasteries. We’ll then have some free time, and in the afternoon we’ll return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
After we have breakfast and make sure we haven’t “forgotten” anything in our rooms, we set off for our city. Making the necessary stops along the way, we arrive in Alexandroupoli around noon. We’ll make a brief stop for coffee or a meal and arrive at our destination in the evening with the best of impressions.
