Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1n-2DEPARTURE - MONTENEGRO - BUTVA - NEUM

We depart at 9:00 p.m. from our offices and, via the Egnatia Highway, pass through Veroia, Kozani, and Kastoria on our way to Krystallopigi. After clearing border formalities, we’ll head to the unique Montenegro (690 km). We’ll arrive in the morning in one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic (3,500 years old)—the picturesque Budva, known for its magnificent coastline and cosmopolitan lifestyle, a city with strong Greek, Roman, and Venetian character. We’ll tour medieval Budva, getting an up-close look at one of the Adriatic’s pearls on the Dalmatian coast. Time for a stroll and coffee in the old town and at the famous marina with its luxury yachts. Immediately afterward, we’ll continue on to the seaside resort of Neum. Arrival and check-in. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3NEUM - DUBROVNIK - CITY TOUR - LOKRUM ISLAND - DUBROVNIK - OLD TOWN

We’ll have a good breakfast and then head to Dubrovnik, where we’ll spend the whole day. More specifically, we’ll visit the Old Town, which is surrounded by 10th-century walls, and walk through the locations where scenes from *Game of Thrones* were filmed. In the historic city center, we’ll see the Franciscan Monastery, the Rectors’ Palace (governors of the Republic of Ragusa), the Cathedral, the old harbor, and the Church of St. Blaise, the city’s patron saint—sights that offer a rare travel experience. At the end of the tour, we recommend a mini-cruise around the city’s bay to view the walls of the walled city from the sea, sail around Lokrum Island, and admire the rugged coastline on the other side of the city. The city center and the Old Town are filled with a cheerful summer atmosphere. Enjoy a nice restaurant or a café with unobstructed views. It’s also a good idea to visit the excellently preserved walls surrounding the city. Of course, the beach is waiting for you to take a dip. Another option is to take the cable car up to the top of Srdj (www.dubrovnikcablecar.com), where the view of the entire old town, the Adriatic Sea, and its islands is magnificent. The ride is short, but well worth it. The cable car moves very slowly and close to the ground, so even if you’re afraid of heights, you’ll most likely have no problem at all. We’re leaving this day free of other visits, because it’s worth dedicating the entire day to getting to know this famous city better. Our guide will be there to provide you with all the necessary information so you can make the most of your time however you wish. Late in the afternoon, after spending plenty of time in this famous city, we’ll return to our hotel.

DAY 4DAY TRIP TO SPLIT AND TROGIR

Today, enjoy a hearty breakfast at the hotel and spend a free day in Neum, or join us on a wonderful optional excursion to two famous cities along the Dalmatian coast. After a fantastic drive along the winding Dalmatian coast, we’ll visit the first of these: the medieval town of Trogir (a city-island-museum) and the former Greek colony of Tragourion, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city is built on a small peninsula connected to the mainland by a small bridge, surrounded by a fortress that, of course, did not prevent the Saracens, the Venetians, the Austro-Hungarian army, and the French from imposing their rule and leaving their cultural mark. The city’s cobblestone streets are lined with magnificent palaces, mansions, and churches, dominated by the stunning Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its incredibly beautiful Radovan Gate. In Trogir, you’ll experience a historic and iconic journey back in time—one from which you’ll never want to return. Just 35 km away lies picturesque Split, the largest city in Dalmatia and a former Yugoslav naval base. Split burst onto the historical scene in the 4th century B.C., when the Roman emperor Diocletian built his enormous palace here to spend his twilight years in comfort and style. And he probably had a good instinct, because this tough guy, who was born in neighboring Solona, is the only emperor to have died of natural causes! We’ll also visit the Cathedral, the Gothic City Hall, and the Renaissance Clock Tower. We’ll have time to enjoy coffee or a meal on the city’s beautiful waterfront, the famous Riva. Late in the afternoon, we’ll return to the hotel.

DAY 5NEUM - KOTOR - TIRANA

We’ll have breakfast at the hotel and then set off for the stunning city of Kotor. Kotor is a monument to natural beauty and culture, a very old and well-preserved city—protected by UNESCO—with strong Byzantine and Venetian influences. It is situated at the innermost point of one of the most beautiful bays along the Montenegrin coast, which some consider to be the largest, southernmost, and most beautiful fjord in the Adriatic. We will visit the 12th-century Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Tryphon, the Orthodox Church of St. Luke, and the imposing Prince’s Palace. We will then depart for Tirana. Check-in at our hotel and overnight stay.

DAY 6TIRANA - CITY TOUR - RETURN

We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast at our hotel, and then we’ll visit the city’s main attractions. We’ll visit the Orthodox Church of the Resurrection of Christ, which was built in 1865 but demolished in 1967 to make way for a high-rise hotel. After many struggles with the Albanian authorities, Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania managed to secure a similar site in a nearby location (near Skenderbeg Square) to rebuild an Orthodox church. The architectural concept of the church is based on the circle, which embodies the concept of eternal time, and on its vertical axis, which connects the earth to the heavens. Next is Skenderbeg Square. This vast central square of the city is named after Albania’s national hero, George Kastrioitis, whose statue stands imposingly in the center. The square is also home to the Et’hem Bey Mosque, with its exceptional murals. We will also visit the National Museum, which features an impressive large mural on the exterior and offers a retrospective of Albanian history inside. We will then depart for our city, making stops along the way.
