Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1Thessaloniki–Athens–Madrid – Panoramic tour of Madrid

Meet at Macedonia Airport at 4:00 a.m. and fly with Aegean to Spain’s stunning capital, with a stopover in Athens. Arrival in Madrid at noon, baggage claim, boarding the bus, and departure for a panoramic tour of Spain’s cosmopolitan capital. Built in the center of the Iberian Peninsula at an altitude of 650 meters, with a population of 4,000,000, it has been the country’s capital since 1561. It is a city brimming with life, culture, and art. With historical monuments, impressive architecture, world-class museums, and a vibrant culinary and nightlife scene, Madrid offers something for every visitor. We’ll discover this enchanting city through a comfortable bus tour, which will give us the chance to enjoy its most important sights.

Our tour will begin in the northern neighborhoods, where we’ll first see one of the city’s most impressive architectural landmarks, the Puerta de Europa, with its iconic twin slanted skyscrapers. We’ll continue to the impressive Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, one of the most legendary soccer stadiums in the world and home to Real Madrid. Walking down the city’s most beautiful avenue, the Paseo de la Castellana, we’ll reach the Plaza de Colón with its statue of Christopher Columbus and end up at the Puerta de Alcalá, the city’s iconic gate. We will then head to the upscale Salamanca district, where we will see the Plaza de Toros, the largest bullring in Spain. Crossing the Paseo del Prado, we’ll see the lush Retiro Park, the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, as well as the impressive fountains of Poseidon and Cybele. After crossing Gran Vía, the city’s most famous boulevard, we’ll arrive at Plaza de España, featuring the statue of Miguel de Cervantes. We will see the famous Egyptian monument of Debod and the Palacio Real, one of the most imposing royal palaces in Europe. In the afternoon, transfer to the hotel, check-in, free time, and overnight stay in Madrid.

DAY 2Walking tour of Madrid’s historic center - Optional excursion to Segovia

After breakfast, we’ll head to Madrid’s historic center for a stroll through the Spanish capital. We’ll visit the city’s most historic square, Plaza Mayor, an architectural gem steeped in history. Next, we’ll visit the city’s most famous square, Puerta del Sol, and the covered San Miguel Market, a must-visit for anyone who loves good food. Free time for a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets of the old town or for a meal of tapas. For art lovers, we recommend a visit to the "Golden Triangle of Art," home to the Prado, the Reina Sofía Museum, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

Those who wish may join us on an optional excursion to Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During our visit, we will see the imposing Roman Aqueduct from the 1st century AD, the famous Alcázar of Segovia, one of Spain’s best-preserved castle-palaces, the historic Jewish quarter, and the impressive Cathedral. At the end of the visit, we’ll have free time in the old town for a stroll or lunch, where you can try the traditional roast suckling pig (cochinillo asado). Overnight stay in Madrid.

DAY 3Excursion to Toledo and departure for Valencia

Breakfast, followed by a departure for Spain’s most historic city, medieval Toledo. The city of three cultures, where El Greco lived and created his masterpieces. We will wander through the narrow streets of the medieval city and visit the Cathedral, where we will see priceless paintings by El Greco, Titian, Raphael, and Caravaggio. Next, we will visit the Church of St. Thomas, where we will admire El Greco’s most significant work, “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.” Descending toward the Jewish quarter, we will come across the great painter’s house. We will then depart for the Mediterranean coast, where we will visit Spain’s third-largest city, Valencia, the birthplace of the famous “paella.” Arrival in the afternoon, transfer to the hotel, check-in, and overnight stay in Valencia.

DAY 4Panoramic & walking tour of Valencia - Departure for Barcelona

After breakfast, we’ll set out for a guided tour of Valencia. We’ll pass through the old town, where we’ll see City Hall, the Lonja de la Seda silk exchange (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the Palace of the Marquess of Dos Aguas. We’ll walk through the market and end up at the Valencia Cathedral, which is believed to house the authentic Holy Chalice. Next to the Cathedral, we’ll see the Miguelet Tower, a symbol of the city. During our walk, we’ll also see the vast Arenas Beach and the City of Arts and Sciences, the impressive complex designed by Santiago Calatrava. We will then depart for Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia. Transfer to the hotel, check-in, and overnight stay in Barcelona.

DAY 5Panoramic & Walking Tour of Barcelona

Breakfast at the hotel, followed by a panoramic tour of Barcelona. We will head to Montjuïc Hill, where we will admire the panoramic view. We will see the Olympic Stadium, the Spanish Village (Poble Espanyol), and Plaza de España with its Magic Fountain. Crossing Passeig de Gracia, we’ll admire Antonio Gaudí’s two most famous houses, the Batlló and Milà apartment buildings. We’ll continue to the imposing Sagrada Família, which we’ll view from the outside. Next, we’ll visit the famous Park Güell with its iconic mosaic salamander (El Drac).

On our way to the old town, we will pass by the Arc de Triomphe, the Olympic Village, and La Barceloneta. The tour will conclude with a walking tour of the El Born district and the Gothic Quarter. Passing through the famous Rambla, we will see the renowned La Boqueria market and the Cathedral. Our tour will end at Plaza Real. Transfer to the hotel and overnight stay in Barcelona.

DAY 6Full-day optional excursion to Figueres, the Dalí Museum, and Girona

Today you have the option of taking an optional excursion to Girona and Figueres. Our tour begins in Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, where we will visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of his works, as well as his jewelry collection. Next, we’ll head to Girona, built on the banks of the Onyar River. We will stroll through the picturesque alleys lined with colorful houses, visit the imposing Cathedral, and explore the Jewish Quarter (Call Jueu), one of the best-preserved in Europe. Return to Barcelona in the late afternoon.

DAY 7One last stroll through Barcelona - Return flight

After breakfast, transfer to the historic center and free time for some last-minute shopping or a visit to the central market, La Boqueria. Transfer to Barcelona Airport and departure for Thessaloniki on a direct Aegean flight.
