Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1 & 2THESSALONIKI – DEPARTURE – BUDAPEST – FIRST ENCOUNTER

We’ll meet at our offices in Thessaloniki at 9:00 p.m. and depart for Budapest on our luxury bus. Traveling through North Macedonia and Serbia, with the necessary stops along the way for rest and meals, we continue on to the Hungarian capital.

During the trip, our experienced tour guide will outline the itinerary for the coming days and provide us with some initial useful information about Budapest, its history, cuisine, and the daily life of its residents. Arrival in the beautiful capital of Hungary and a first panoramic tour of the city. We’ll get an initial sense of Buda and Pest, the two historic districts that developed on opposite banks of the Danube and were officially united, along with Obuda, in 1873.

We’ll then transfer to the hotel and check in. The rest of the day is free for you to rest or take your first stroll through the streets of the Hungarian capital.

DAY 3BUDAPEST – HEROES' SQUARE – Vajdahunyad Castle – Andrássy Avenue – Opera House – Buda Castle – Fishermen’s Bastion – ST. STEPHEN’S BASILICA – PARLIAMENT – OPTIONAL NIGHT TOUR & CRUISE ON THE DANUBE

After breakfast, we begin our comprehensive tour of Budapest, a city that impresses with its monumental architecture, grand boulevards, historic palaces, and its unique location on both banks of the Danube.

Our first stop is the imposing Heroes’ Square, one of the city’s most important squares. Dominating its center is the Millennium Monument, dedicated to the Magyars’ settlement in the Carpathian Basin and to the most important figures in Hungarian history. We continue on to the lush City Park—Városliget—one of Budapest’s most popular recreational areas. There we’ll see the impressive Vajdahunyad Castle, which was originally built for the 1896 Millennium celebrations and combines different architectural periods and styles from Hungarian history.

Next is the elegant Andrássy Avenue, Budapest’s most important monumental boulevard, lined with Neo-Renaissance mansions, historic buildings, embassies, and luxury shops. Along the way, we’ll admire, among other sights, the famous Hungarian State Opera House, one of the city’s architectural gems.

We’ll then head to Buda and make our way up to the historic Castle District. We’ll explore the imposing Royal Palace complex, which dominates the hill above the Danube and is one of the most important symbols of the Hungarian capital. Walking through the picturesque streets of the old town, we’ll reach the fairytale-like Fishermen’s Bastion, with its Neo-Romanesque towers and distinctive arcades. From here, we’ll enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Budapest, with the Danube, the bridges, and the Parliament Building stretching out before us. Next to it stands the impressive Matthias Church, associated with important royal ceremonies and coronations in Hungarian history.

Returning to Pest, we’ll see St. Stephen’s Basilica, dedicated to the first king and founder of the Hungarian state, and continue on to the iconic Hungarian Parliament Building. This impressive Neo-Gothic structure, built on the banks of the Danube, is one of the largest and most recognizable parliamentary buildings in the world.

A little further down, we’ll come across the poignant memorial “Shoes on the Banks of the Danube,” dedicated to the people —mainly Jews from Budapest—who were executed on the riverbanks by members of the fascist Arrow Cross Party during World War II.

After the tour ends, there will be free time in the city center for dining, shopping, and exploring on your own.

Budapest by Night and a Danube Cruise

In the evening, we recommend joining our optional night tour. We’ll experience a different, atmospheric side of Budapest, when the bridges, the Royal Palace, the Fishermen’s Bastion, and the Parliament Building are spectacularly illuminated. The evening concludes with a wonderful cruise on the Danube. From the boat, we’ll enjoy panoramic views of the illuminated Buda and Pest sides and see some of the city’s most beautiful landmarks reflected in the river’s waters. An experience that is rightly considered one of the highlights of any trip to Budapest.

DAY 4FULL-DAY TRIP TO VIENNA

After breakfast, we depart for the optional full-day excursion to Vienna, the elegant capital of Austria and one of Europe’s most important cultural metropolises.

Upon arrival, we’ll begin our tour at the impressive Belvedere, the Baroque palace complex built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today, its halls house important collections of Austrian and European art, with the Upper Belvedere showcasing, among other works, masterpieces by Gustav Klimt.

Next, we’ll take a bus tour along the famous Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard that encircles Vienna’s historic center. Along the way, we’ll see some of the Austrian capital’s most important buildings: the State Opera House, the Imperial Hofburg Palace, the twin museums of Art History and Natural History, the Parliament, City Hall, the University, the Burgtheater, and the MuseumsQuartier.

We’ll also see the impressive St. Charles Borromeo Church (Karlskirche) and the Neo-Gothic Votivkirche, two of the city’s most distinctive religious landmarks. Next, we’ll head toward the historic center. We’ll walk through the old Greek quarter, home to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, and through the city’s elegant narrow streets, we’ll arrive at the imposing St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s most important symbol and spiritual center.

This will be followed by free time in the heart of the city for lunch, coffee, shopping, and personal sightseeing. You can stroll along the famous Kärntner Straße and the Graben, sample Viennese chocolate and authentic strudel, or enjoy a coffee at one of the city’s historic cafés.

In the afternoon, departure and return to Budapest.

DAY 5VILLAGES ALONG THE DANUBE – SAINT ANDREW – VISEGRAD – ESTERGOM – BUDAPEST – OPTIONAL EVENING WITH GYPSY VIOLINS

After breakfast, we set out on one of the most beautiful day trips you can take from Budapest. Today’s route takes us through beautiful landscapes, historic towns, and picturesque villages that have sprung up along Central Europe’s longest river.

Saint Andrew – Szentendre

Our first stop is the picturesque town of Agios Andreas, known internationally as Szentendre. It is one of Hungary’s most atmospheric small towns, with cobblestone alleys, colorful Baroque houses, small squares, churches, galleries, and folk art shops. The town’s unique character was shaped by the Serbian, Dalmatian, and Greek communities that settled here in the late 17th century. Today it is considered the “city of artists” and is a favorite destination for those seeking a more romantic and laid-back side of Hungary. We’ll have time to stroll through the picturesque streets, take photos, and shop for local products and souvenirs.

Visegrád

We continue on to historic Visegrád, a town closely linked to Hungary’s medieval history and to King Matthias Corvinus. The area is known for its royal past, the ruins of the palace, and the imposing fortress towering over the Danube. From the Visegrád area, one can enjoy one of the most iconic views of the Danube Bend, where the river changes course amid the lush green hills of the Hungarian countryside.

Esztergom

Our next stop is historic Esztergom, one of Hungary’s oldest cities and the first royal seat of the Hungarian state. This is where Saint Stephen, the first king of Hungary, and the city remains to this day the country’s most important religious center. We’ll admire the imposing Esztergom Basilica, the largest church in Hungary, which towers over the Danube and houses one of the country’s most significant treasures of ecclesiastical art.

After our tour, we’ll return to Budapest at noon, giving us extra free time to enjoy the city. You can do some last-minute shopping, visit the famous Central Market, or relax at one of the historic cafés and pastry shops in the Hungarian capital.

Optional Traditional Hungarian Evening

In the evening, we recommend you take part in one of the most authentic experiences of the trip: a traditional Hungarian dinner at a typical tavern. We’ll sample local dishes, such as the famous goulash, and enjoy live music featuring traditional Hungarian and Gypsy fiddles. A warm and lively evening, the perfect way to wrap up our last day in Budapest. Overnight stay in Budapest.

DAY 6BUDAPEST – RETURN TO THESSALONIKI

Early in the morning, we pick up a packed breakfast and set off on our return trip. Following the route through Serbia and making the necessary stops along the way for rest, coffee, and meals, we arrive in Thessaloniki late at night, having completed a full six-day trip to two imperial capitals and the most beautiful historic cities of the Danube Bend.
