Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1DIRECT FLIGHT TO BERLIN – EAST SIDE GALLERY – ALEXANDERPLATZ – FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THE CITY

Meet at “Macedonia” Airport and board the direct EasyJet flight to the German capital. Arrival at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, baggage claim, and meeting with our Greek-speaking local guide, a permanent resident of Berlin. Board the bus and depart for the city. During the trip, we’ll get some initial useful information about Berlin, its history, its neighborhoods, how to get around, and everything else that will help us make the most of our stay. Our first stop is the famous East Side Gallery, the largest surviving continuous section of the Berlin Wall. Where one of the most powerful symbols of Europe’s division once stood, there is now an impressive open-air gallery filled with works by artists from around the world. We’ll have time to walk along the Wall and see some of its most iconic works, with the impressive Oberbaumbrücke—one of the city’s most distinctive bridges—right beside us. We’ll then walk along the historic Karl-Marx-Allee, with its monumental buildings from the East German era, and arrive at the famous Alexanderplatz. Here stands the iconic TV Tower—Fernsehturm—one of Berlin’s most recognizable landmarks. We’ll get a first glimpse of the city’s historic center and, depending on the time available and traffic conditions, we’ll take a panoramic drive through the area of the Berliner Dom, Museum Island, and the Humboldt Forum, landmarks we’ll explore in more detail the following day. We’ll then transfer to the hotel and check into our rooms. The evening is free for your first night out. Our local guide will recommend restaurants, German beer halls, bars, and lovely areas for an evening stroll. During the holiday season, you can enjoy the city’s Christmas atmosphere starting on your very first night, sampling hot Glühwein and traditional German delicacies.

DAY 2BERLIN GUIDED TOUR – BRANDENBURG GATE – Reichstag – Potsdamer Platz – Checkpoint Charlie – Berlin Walking Tour – Museum Island – Gendarmenmarkt

After a good breakfast at the hotel, we begin our grand tour of Berlin, following a route that combines the city’s most important landmarks with neighborhoods and historic sites that reveal its true character. We’ll start in West Berlin and on the famous Kurfürstendamm, one of the city’s best-known shopping boulevards. Here we’ll see the distinctive Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, whose ruins have been preserved as a memorial to the destruction of World War II. Passing through the lush Tiergarten, Berlin’s “green lung,” and the iconic Victory Column, we head toward the political and historical center of the German capital. We’ll see the imposing Reichstag, seat of the German Parliament, and shortly afterward we’ll find ourselves in front of Berlin’s ultimate symbol, the famous Brandenburg Gate. A short distance away is the moving Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, one of the city’s most important monuments to contemporary historical memory. We continue on to Potsdamer Platz, a striking example of Berlin’s transformation following reunification. Where for decades there was a no-man’s-land next to the Wall, today modern buildings stand and one of the city’s most important urban centers has emerged. Next stop is the famous Checkpoint Charlie, the best-known crossing point between the American and Soviet sectors during the Cold War. From here, we’ll continue on foot, discovering the city in a different way. We’ll arrive at the elegant Gendarmenmarkt, one of Berlin’s most beautiful squares, and, passing through historic Bebelplatz, we’ll walk along the famous Unter den Linden. We’ll continue to the historic Scheunenviertel, a neighborhood closely linked to the city’s Jewish history and today one of the most creative neighborhoods in the city center. We’ll walk through the famous Hackesche Höfe, an impressive complex of interconnected courtyards featuring unique architecture, boutiques, cafés, galleries, and cultural venues. We’ll view the exterior of the distinctive New Synagogue, with its striking golden dome, and head toward Museum Island, one of Europe’s most important cultural complexes. Here we’ll see the imposing Berliner Dom, the island’s historic museums, and the impressive Humboldt Forum, housed in the reconstructed Royal Palace. Our guided tour concludes in the historic heart of the city, and from here on, you’ll have free time to continue exploring at your own pace.

Our suggestions for the rest of the day Pergamon – Das Panorama: A unique experience for those who love archaeology and want to take an imaginary journey to ancient Pergamon. DDR Museum: An interactive presentation of daily life in the former East Germany. Alexanderplatz & Fernsehturm: Climb the TV Tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city. KaDeWe & Kurfürstendamm: For shopping, dining, and a stroll through the cosmopolitan side of West Berlin. During the holiday season, the perfect way to end the evening is at one of Berlin’s Christmas markets.

DAY 3TRIP TO DRESDEN

After breakfast, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy Berlin however you’d like. For those who want to make their trip even more memorable, we recommend a unique optional full-day excursion to Dresden, the capital of Saxony and one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. We’ll depart in the morning and head toward Saxony. Built on the banks of the Elbe River, Dresden experienced a period of great prosperity as a royal capital and evolved into one of the most important centers of art, architecture, and culture in Central Europe, earning the nickname “Florence of the Elbe.” Despite the immense destruction it suffered during World War II, the city has been impressively rebuilt and today stands as a fascinating collection of historical monuments, palaces, museums, and magnificent Baroque architecture. Upon arrival, we’ll begin our tour of the city’s historic heart. We’ll see the famous Semperoper, one of Germany’s most important opera houses, the impressive Zwinger, the Royal Palace, and the Cathedral. We’ll continue on to the famous Fürstenzug—the Procession of the Princes—with its striking depictions of the rulers of Saxony, and arrive at the iconic Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady, which was destroyed during the war and whose reconstruction became a symbol of the city’s rebirth. We’ll also stroll along the famous Brühlsche Terrasse, known as the “Balcony of Europe,” enjoying beautiful views of the Elbe River and the historic city. This is followed by free time for lunch, coffee, shopping, and exploring on your own. During the Christmas season, the experience becomes even more special, as Dresden fills with festively decorated squares, illuminated buildings, and traditional holiday markets, creating one of the most beautiful Christmas atmospheres in Germany. In the afternoon, we’ll depart and return to Berlin.

For those staying in Berlin: Today is the perfect day to explore whatever you’d like to see at a more leisurely pace: Reichstag: Visit the impressive glass dome of the German Parliament; advance reservations are required. Topography of Terror: One of the city’s most important historical sites, located where the Gestapo and SS headquarters once stood. Jewish Museum: One of the city’s most important museums, both for its exhibits and its distinctive architecture. Berlin Zoo & Aquarium: An excellent choice for families and those looking for a more relaxed day out. Kreuzberg: For those who want to experience the most modern and multicultural side of Berlin, full of street food, cafés, bars, and alternative culture.

DAY 4POTSDAM – SPY BRIDGE – CECILIENHOF – DUTCH QUARTER – SANSSOUCI

After breakfast, we set out on a wonderful excursion that will take us from modern-day Berlin to the world of the Prussian kings, imperial palaces, and the major events of the 20th century. Our destination is historic Potsdam, the capital of the state of Brandenburg and one of Germany’s most elegant cities. Along the way, we’ll pass the famous Glienicke Bridge, the legendary “Spy Bridge.” At this very spot, right on the former border between East and West, actual spy exchanges took place between the two opposing camps during the Cold War. Next, we’ll visit the historic Cecilienhof, the palace associated with one of the most significant events of the 20th century, the 1945 Potsdam Conference, at which the leaders of the Allied powers determined key aspects of postwar Europe. We continue toward the center of Potsdam, an elegant city full of parks, lakes, historic buildings, and royal residences. We’ll explore the famous Dutch Quarter, with its distinctive red-brick houses built in the 18th century for Dutch artisans and now one of the city’s most beautiful and frequently photographed areas. We’ll stroll through the elegant squares and pedestrian streets of the historic center and have time for coffee, lunch, or a brief exploration on our own. The highlight of the day is, of course, the famous Sanssouci (tickets at your own expense), the summer residence of Frederick the Great and one of Germany’s most significant palace complexes. The elegant Rococo palace, the famous terraces, the fountains, the statues, and the vast gardens create a unique royal setting. We’ll take a walk through the park, enjoying the architecture and the special atmosphere of a place that for centuries served as a refuge and retreat for the Prussian rulers. After our visit, we’ll return to Berlin. The evening is free for dinner, drinks, or one last long stroll through the German capital at night

DAY 5BERLIN – FREE TIME – LAST-MINUTE SHOPPING – RETURN FLIGHT

After our last breakfast at the hotel, today is a free day so you can enjoy your final hours in Berlin exactly as you wish. Depending on the time of your return flight and the scheduled check-out time from the hotel, you can use the time you have left for one last stroll, shopping, a coffee, or a visit you saved for last. You can head back to the cosmopolitan Kurfürstendamm and the famous KaDeWe for your final shopping, or make your way to Alexanderplatz and the shopping streets in the city center. Those who prefer a more atmospheric final stroll can return to the Hackesche Höfe, walk along the Spree River, or enjoy one last coffee in the Nikolaiviertel neighborhood. Alternatively, visit a museum you didn’t have time for in the previous days, or simply enjoy the city’s unique daily life without a set itinerary and without any time pressure. During the holiday season, you can spend your final hours doing some last-minute Christmas shopping for gifts and soaking up one last taste of Berlin’s festive atmosphere. At the scheduled time, meet at the hotel, board the bus, and transfer to the airport. A five-day journey filled with diverse sights comes to an end: historic and modern Berlin, the Wall and the Cold War, the imperial palaces of Potsdam, and—for those who choose it—the enchanting city of Dresden.

Notes: The itinerary may be modified according to the needs of the tour without omitting any key sites.
