We’ll meet early in the morning at 7:00 a.m. and depart. After the necessary stops, we’ll arrive at the stunning Syrrako, perched on a steep slope—a stone-built, imposing village with unique architecture. Free time for lunch. Then we’ll arrive at the Holy Monastery of Kipina, perhaps the most impressive monastery in Epirus. Its name most likely derives from the gardens cultivated by the monks, and it is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Arrival in Arta and check-in at the hotel. Overnight stay.
After breakfast, we set out to explore the unparalleled beauty of the mountainous region of Arta. Our first stop is Peta, the site of the historic battle in 1822. It is built in an amphitheater-like layout on a hill covered with olive and citrus trees, overlooking the Pournari Dam and the Arachthos Reservoir. As we climb uphill, we’ll come across the hidden village of Arta, Vourgareli, with its amphitheater-style houses, elevated square, and the stone-built fountains “Archonto” and “Krystallo,” with four and seven spouts respectively—a true gem and defining feature of the village’s identity. We’ll also visit the red church in the village of Paleochori, also known as Panagia Vellas, and the Monastery of St. George, built in 1974. Return to the hotel to rest, and in the afternoon we’ll explore the city of Arta, with its castle and Byzantine churches, the most notable of which is Panagia Parigoritissa. Return to our hotel and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we’ll begin our tour with our first stop at Zalongo, the site of the sacrifice of the women of Souli, who in 1803 chose to die rather than surrender to Ali Pasha. On the southern slope of the mountain, we’ll see the ruins of the ancient city of Kassope, dating from the 4th century B.C. Next, we will visit the Necromanteion of Acheron, which is the most significant and oldest necromanteion. The ancients would take refuge at the sanctuary, offering libations (spondes, offerings) to the dead in order to communicate with the souls and obtain various pieces of information. We will then arrive in Glyki, the historic village on the banks of the Acheron River, surrounded by greenery and flowing waters. It is believed that the sources of the Acheron are located there—the river that has been associated since antiquity with the passage of souls into the world of Hades. Free time for lunch and activities by the river, weather permitting! Return to our hotel.
After breakfast, we’ll set out, making our first stop at one of the region’s mountain villages, Rodavgi, with its famous tile-roofed Church of St. Paraskevi and stone bell tower. Next, we’ll head to Plaka, where we’ll see the historic stone single-arch bridge of Plaka, which has now been restored. Afterward, we’ll visit the Anemotrypa Cave, with its three levels and the Red Lake chamber. We’ll end up in Pramanta, where we’ll have some free time. After making the necessary stops, we’ll arrive back in our city in the evening.
