Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1FLIGHT FROM MUNICH – CITY TOUR – NUREMBERG

Meet at the airport in the morning and board the Aegean Airlines flight for the direct flight to Munich. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Munich, Germany’s third-largest city, for a tour. It is a major economic, industrial, and cultural hub of the country. A city that blends large high-tech industries with open-air beer gardens, art, culture, creativity, and quiet corners, as well as Baroque and modern styles. These are not contradictions, but typical characteristics of Munich.

We’ll walk through the historic center, starting from the central Marienplatz square with the Old Town Hall, the imposing New Town Hall with its 43 bells, and the column of the Virgin Mary, topped with a golden statue. We’ll continue to St. Peter’s Church, which is also Munich’s oldest church. Next is Theatiner Straße, the famous pedestrian street lined with shops and the neoclassical Munich Opera House. This is where Maximilianstrasse begins, the city’s most exclusive street, home to stores of internationally renowned brands—such as Gucci, Armani, and Bulgari—as well as private art galleries, cafés, and restaurants. We’ll continue to the Hofbräuhaus, one of Munich’s most famous beer halls, which is owned by the Bavarian government, and as we walk on, we’ll come to the house where Mozart wrote the opera Idomeneo in 1780. At noon, free time in the city center to visit historic beer halls and enjoy the famous grilled sausages. We will then depart for Nuremberg. Arrival and check-in at our hotel. Early in the evening, we will have the opportunity for a first look at the historic city center.

DAY 2NUREMBERG – CITY TOUR – BAMBERG, “THE ROME OF FRANCONIA”

We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast and then visit the old town, which is surrounded by 5 kilometers of medieval walls and fortified towers (71 of the original 130 remain today), to stroll through its picturesque alleys. The Pegnitz River, which cuts the old town in two, the picturesque little bridges, and the cobblestone streets create a beautiful scene. We will visit the Main Square, City Hall, the Cathedral, and the main market. Afterward, we will have free time in this beautiful city.

If you wish, join us on an optional excursion to nearby medieval Bamberg, located 60 kilometers to the north. The “Rome of Franconia, the enchanting Bamberg, is built in a unique location, surrounded by seven hills. It served as a religious and commercial center for more than five centuries, while the city’s more than 1,300 historic buildings and the beautiful canals of the “Little Venice” neighborhood contributed to its inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. During our tour of the city, we will see the unique bridge over the Pegnitz River, where the impressive Old Town Hall stands out, the Cathedral (10th–13th centuries) —one of the largest Romanesque cathedrals in Germany—as well as the Old and New Residences (Alte and Neue Residenz). In Bamberg, you’ll find many antique shops and numerous breweries specializing in the production of the famous smoked beer (Rauchbier). Return to Nuremberg in the late afternoon.

DAY 3NUREMBERG – ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER – DINKELSBUHL – HEIDELBERG

Breakfast and departure to explore a section of the Romantic Road, with the towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl as highlights. The Romantic Road stretches for approximately 350 km, starting in Würzburg and descending to the Alps in the town of Füssen. It was given this name after World War II by the Allies for its fairytale landscapes, unique architecture, and majestic castles. Arrival in the unique town of Rothenburg and a tour of the historic center. Medieval Rothenburg, located in the state of Bavaria in the Franconia region, is one of Germany’s most picturesque towns, featuring distinctive medieval gates. Here we will have the opportunity to see the city walls, the Hospital Church, City Hall, the hall that once housed the City Council, and the cathedral. Free time to explore the town’s picturesque streets.

We continue our journey to Dinkelsbühl, another medieval, fortified town with moats and medieval gates. The 15th-century Church of St. George is one of the oldest and best-preserved in Germany. In front of the church lies the Weinmarkt, the central square with its impressive merchants’ houses and more. Fortunately, it was spared during the Thirty Years’ War, and since then this event has been celebrated in July with a grand parade, the “Kindertsche.” We will continue on to magnificent Heidelberg. Arrival in the afternoon and check-in at our hotel. Early in the evening, we will explore the historic center on a lovely stroll through the city’s historic pedestrian zone.

DAY 4HEIDELBERG - CITY TOUR - NEKAR RIVER – STRASBOURG

We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast, and then we’ll spend the day in fairytale-like Heidelberg—it’s truly worth it. It is home to Germany’s oldest university, built on the banks of the Neckar River and in the shadow of the castle that dominates the hill. We’ll stroll through its pedestrianized historic center, considered Germany’s longest pedestrian zone at 1.6 km. We’ll admire medieval and modern churches, such as the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Jesuit Church. Also impressive in the city are the so-called “student prison, the “Witches’ Tower, part of the medieval fortification wall, the Zum Ritter Hotel, which dates back to 1592, the city’s old university, and the bridge connecting the city to the opposite bank. Free time for lunch at one of the traditional restaurants in the old town, famous for their local dishes, or at one of the lively beer halls. You can also enjoy a mini-cruise on the Neckar River to admire the city from a different perspective. In the afternoon, departure for Strasbourg. Check-in at our hotel and free time for a first exploration of the historic center.

DAY 5STRASBOURG – CITY TOUR – CRUISE ON THE ILL RIVER

After breakfast, the day is dedicated to the unique city of Strasbourg. We will begin our tour in the part of the city that resembles the capital of Europe more than an old Alsatian town, in contrast to the old town. The historic center, known as "Petite France" (Little France), was designated a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO in 1988. It has the vibrancy of a university town, thanks to the University of Strasbourg, founded in 1566. We will walk through the old town, filled with picturesque wooden and colorful houses, dominated by the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg. It is worth admiring the astronomical clock and the 12th-century stained-glass windows. In Place du Château, next to the cathedral, stands the 18th-century Roan Tower, once the archbishop’s residence, which today houses the city’s main museums: the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Archaeology, and the Camérzel House. At noon, free time in the city’s pedestrian streets for coffee or a meal at the excellent Alsatian restaurants, followed by check-in at the hotel. In the afternoon, we recommend exploring the city by boat: one of the most romantic ways to discover the city’s beauty, cruising down the Ill River on a 75-minute cruise. You’ll get to see the entire historic center, enjoy panoramic views of the buildings in the Petite France district, the traditional houses along the river, the covered bridges, the German quarter, and the impressive, ultra-modern buildings of the European Parliament. In the evening, dine on a glass of Alsatian wine and enjoy romantic strolls through the old town.

DAY 6STRASBOURG - WINE ROUTE - RICKWIR - EGGISCHEM - COLMAR

Join us today on a wonderful optional excursion to the famous Alsatian wine villages. South of the city of Strasbourg, within a 100-kilometer radius, there are 67 renowned wine villages on French soil. Because this region is bordered on one side by the Vosges Mountains and on the other by the Rhine, a unique microclimate is created that is ideal for viticulture. Our first stop will be the small town of Riquewihr, nestled among vast vineyards on the eastern slope of the Vosges Mountains. It retains its 16th-century architectural style, and its few remaining residents continue to this day to cultivate Riesling grapes for wine production. It retains part of its fortifications, cobblestone streets and towers, old fountains, and timber-framed houses.

We continue on to Colmar, a town that looks like a painting. Pastel-colored wooden houses lining the canals and colorful flowers create a unique atmosphere in what is perhaps the most beautiful town in Alsace. Its historic center is crossed by the Lauch, a tributary of the Ill. Don’t miss the chance to try a glass of the excellent white wine in Colmar, which is rightly called the wine capital. We continue to Eguisheim, our final destination, which has preserved its traditional architecture intact. Built in concentric circles around its 13th-century octagonal castle, it is surrounded by vineyards. We will admire the town’s 8th-century castle, Pope Leo IX’s chapel, and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, which blends Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Late in the afternoon, we return to our hotel in Strasbourg.

DAY 7STRASBOURG – BADEN-BADEN – KARLSRUHE – STUTTGART – RETURN FLIGHT

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the city of Baden-Baden. Located in Germany, it is built in the Baroque style. A lush, green city famous for its thermal baths, which date back to Roman times. It’s worth visiting the Casino to admire its magnificent building. We then depart for Karlsruhe, the city designed in the shape of a fan, with its imposing palace at the center. We begin our tour at the Karlsruhe Palace (Karlsruher Schloss), the city’s crown jewel. Surrounded by lush green gardens, the palace now houses the Museum of Cultural History of Baden. We head toward the market square (Marktplatz) with its pyramid, the unique mausoleum of the city’s founder. Next to it stands the majestic Cathedral, and a little further on, City Hall. We then transfer to Stuttgart Airport for our return flight.
