Indonesia – Bali: Action, Unfiltered Photos, and Hidden Gems!

Indonesia isn’t just tropical paradises and idyllic beaches. It’s a place where spirituality meets untamed nature and ancient civilizations intertwine with centuries of history. Starting in Java, the cultural and geographical heart of the country, you’ll come face to face with smoking volcanoes, ancient temples that look like stone embroidery, waterfalls plunging powerfully into jungles, and locals who smile at you with genuine warmth. Next, we head to Bali, where we’ll experience a blend of relaxation and tradition, filled with rice paddies, rituals, and unique colors as the sun sets. Then you’ll dive into the wild beauty of the Gili Islands, where time stands still, cars are banned, and the azure sea needs no filter. The itinerary has been designed around the best flights and transfers from region to region, so we can make the most of every day of the trip.

Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1Departure for Indonesia

The time for a new, exciting adventure has arrived. At Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, with your luggage in hand and your excitement at its peak, you’ll meet the rest of the Dream Team for our first get-together. Once we’ve completed passport control and check-in, we’ll board our flight to Jakarta, the multifaceted capital of Indonesia. Leave your daily routine behind, because soon you’ll be in the heart of Southeast Asia. Amid the layovers and maps, you’ll begin to realize that the journey is just beginning. Get ready for everything that lies ahead… Jungles, ancient temples, active volcanoes, and exotic islands. A world with a culture and sights completely different from anything you’ve experienced so far awaits you.

DAY 2Arrival in Yogyakarta - Beringharjo Market - Malioboro Street

As soon as you set foot in Yogyakarta, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a side of Indonesia that’s rarely featured in tourist brochures. The very first day holds a small cultural explosion. As soon as we pick up our luggage, we head to the hotel. Yogyakarta (or “Jogja” to the locals) isn’t just a city; it’s the soul of Java. Here, the traditional way of life remains alive. From the deep respect for the Sultan to the rhythm of the bustling markets, this city offers the perfect introduction to the history, art, and philosophy of a place that harmoniously blends the past with the present.

We drop off our things and immediately get lost in the Pasar Beringharjo market. It is the city’s oldest and largest market, situated on the legendary Jalan Malioboro, where the heart of Yogyakarta beats strongly. Surrounded by batik fabrics and antiques, let your senses run free… Follow the aromas of street food, try spicy Pecel, traditional Gudeg, or juicy sate ayam (grilled chicken), and become one with the authentic rhythm of everyday life. And since your body needs a reset after long flights, there’s nothing better than wrapping up your stroll—if you’d like—with a traditional Indonesian massage. It’s the perfect way to prepare for the unique sights that await you starting tomorrow.

DAY 3Borobudur - Prambanan

You get up before sunrise. That means you’ll be getting a breakfast box today. If you’re not a fan of waking up very early, it’s better to have some free time in the city. You arrive at the world’s largest Buddhist monument, the Borobudur Temple, while fog still shrouds the hundreds of stupas and stone reliefs. The journey takes about an hour and fifteen minutes, bringing us face-to-face with a 9th-century architectural marvel. The sun slowly peeks over the horizon, creating an atmosphere of absolute spirituality and awe. You’ll feel like the protagonist in an ancient mystery.

Next, we head east for about fifty minutes toward the majestic Prambanan Temple. With their intricate, almost "lace-like" details, the temple’s towering spires rise toward the sky as a tribute to the Hindu gods, enchanting visitors with their imposing size and inspiring awe in everyone who sees them. As the sun sets, you’ll experience Java’s most iconic sunset before returning to the city, a journey that takes about forty-five minutes.

DAY 4Probolinggo

We leave the cultural capital, Yogyakarta, behind us and set off on our journey to East Java, where nature becomes wild and majestic. Instead of an exhausting 8-hour road trip, we board the Executive train bound for Probolinggo, the gateway to the great volcanoes. You sit comfortably in your armchair while the train glides silently along the tracks, passing through endless lush rice paddies and tropical forests.

As soon as the train stops in Probolinggo, we board our vehicle and begin the ascent to Cemoro Lawang, the village that literally hangs over the crater of Bromo. It sits at an altitude of about 2,200 meters and is the perfect base for anyone who wants to experience Bromo to the fullest. The atmosphere here is unique… Fog that often blankets the houses, cool mountain air, and the smell of sulfur that reminds you that you’re sleeping next to an active volcano. From here, the view of the “Sea of Sand” (Lautan Pasir) and the volcanic cones is mesmerizing. By choosing to stay up on the mountain, you’ll get precious hours of rest before the Jeep picks you up for the most magical sunrise of your life!

DAY 5Bromo

You wake up at 3 a.m.—yes, we know it’s brutal, but it’s worth every second. A jeep is waiting to take you to Penanjakan Viewpoint, so you can witness the colors of dawn at their most mesmerizing. You walk across a lunar landscape, climb to the rim of the volcano, and peer inside. A lunar landscape unfolds before you… The crater of Bromo smolders, the valley is shrouded in clouds, and the sun slowly emerges from the horizon. The climb to the rim of Bromo is short but intense.

After the descent, the road journey begins toward the city of Banyuwangi, the base for your second volcano, Mount Ijen. The journey takes about 6 hours, with views of rice paddies, mountains, and villages straight out of another era. You arrive late in the afternoon, and we head to the hotel. But there isn’t much time for sleep, because the next climb starts at midnight.

DAY 6Mount Ijen

At midnight, wearing a gas mask and a headlamp, you set off for Mount Ijen. The climb takes 1.5–2 hours in the silence of the night. Once you reach the summit, you carefully descend toward the crater to witness the Blue Fire phenomenon. This is a rare chemical phenomenon where sulfur burns, creating blue flames. As dawn breaks, the acidic lake unfolds before you with its toxic turquoise hue.

We continue on to enchanting Ubud, with a short drive to Ketapang Harbor, where the ferry awaits to take you to Bali. Once we arrive at Gilimanuk Harbor in Bali, we drive through lush green landscapes toward Ubud. Ubud offers a more authentic and peaceful side of the island. Small cafes with jungle views, traditional markets, yoga classes, and therapeutic spas. In the evening, we recommend enjoying a Balinese massage. Tonight we’ll be staying in Ubud.

DAY 7Tirta Empul Temple - Tegalalang - Cretya Ubud

Our first stop is the Holy Spring Temple (Tirta Empul). For over a thousand years, Hindus in Bali have been going there for its healing springs. If you’d like, you can take part in this ritual too. We’ll continue on to the famous rice terraces of Tegalalang, where we’ll take a short walk. You’ll have the chance to take that classic photo on the swings against the lush green backdrop! Our final stop is Cretya Ubud, where you’ll have the chance to relax in the 3 pools overlooking the rice fields.

DAY 8Lempuyang Temple

One of the most famous photos you’ve seen of Bali is of the majestic Lempuyang Temple, known as the Gates of Heaven. To take these photos, you’ll need to wake up very early, and the wait is long. Along the way, we’ll pass through vast stretches of beautiful, untouched rice paddies and admire breathtaking mountains. The local guide will explain the history of the ancient temple.

DAY 9Monkey Forest - Kanto Lampo - Uluwatu

Our first stop will be the Monkey Forest, home to a large population of macaques in the village of Padangtegal. We’ll continue on to Kanto Lampo Waterfall, famous on Instagram for its unique rock formations and lush vegetation. Our final stop for today is the Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu), perched on a steep cliff 70 meters above the ocean. It’s the best spot to watch the sunset and enjoy traditional Kecak dance performances.

DAY 10Gili Trawangan

The adventure to the Gili Islands begins early at the port of Padang Bai. You board the speedboat and spend the next 1.5 to 2 hours cruising the waters of the Indian Ocean. The boat docks at Gili Trawangan. Cars and motorcycles are banned on the island, so you’ll see only horse-drawn carts (Cidomo) and bicycles. The laid-back atmosphere and white sand immediately sweep you into a rhythm of absolute freedom.

DAY 11Gili Meno - Gili Air

Today, you have the option to go island hopping to the neighboring islands of Gili Meno and Gili Air. On Gili Meno, you can swim past underwater statues or look for sea turtles. On Gili Air, you can relax at a beachside café with your feet in the sand. It’s up to you how you choose to divide your time among the three islands.

DAY 12Gili Trawangan – Return to Bali – Seminyak

Final moments on the Gili Islands and a return by speedboat to Bali. We’re heading to Seminyak, the island’s most cosmopolitan area, with top-notch beach clubs and sophisticated restaurants. Here, the sunset is a ritual accompanied by music and vibrant colors. Tonight we’ll be staying in Seminyak.

DAY 13Return to Bali

We have some free time in Seminyak for one last brunch, souvenir shopping, or a stroll along the beach. Late in the afternoon, we head to Denpasar Airport for our return flight, taking with us memories of Java, Bali, and the Gili Islands.
