Today, it is one of Africa’s largest metropolises and one of the most important religious and spiritual centers of the Arab and Muslim world. A vast metropolis that uniquely combines the vibrancy of the present with the charm of a history spanning thousands of years. The modern city was founded in the 10th century AD by the Fatimid dynasty, but the wider region has for centuries been the epicenter of some of humanity’s most significant civilizations. And yet, this fascinating world is just a few hours’ flight away. Meet at “Macedonia” Airport and take a direct Aegean flight to Cairo. Upon arrival, we’ll immediately begin our first exploration of the fascinating Egyptian capital, taking a true “plunge” into its ancient history and culture. Our first stop is Old or Coptic Cairo, one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. Here we’ll see the ruins of the Roman towers and the remnants of the ancient Fortress of Babylon, which bear witness to the long-standing presence of various civilizations in the area. Next, we’ll visit the famous Hanging Church, one of the oldest and most important Coptic churches in Egypt. It is built atop the gates of the Roman fortress and stands out for its unique architecture and rich interior decoration. Next is the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, known as Abu Serga. According to tradition, the Holy Family took refuge at this site during their stay in Egypt. We will also visit the historic Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of Cairo’s most important Jewish landmarks. We gradually leave Coptic Cairo behind and move on to a different chapter in the city’s history: Islamic Cairo. We’ll visit the imposing Citadel of Saladin, one of Egypt’s most important medieval fortresses, which for centuries served as a center of political power and defense. Inside, the famous Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, stands out. With its impressive minarets and large domes, it is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and offers a unique panoramic view of the vast city of Cairo. Our day concludes in the heart of Islamic Cairo, at the legendary Khan el-Khalili Bazaar. Founded in the 14th century during the Mamluk period, it is one of the oldest and liveliest markets in the world. In its narrow, labyrinthine alleys, we’ll find thousands of small shops and workshops selling jewelry, fabrics, perfumes, spices, leather goods, handmade items, and traditional Egyptian products. Local artisans continue to preserve techniques and motifs inspired by ancient Egyptian and Islamic artistic traditions. Here we’ll enjoy a fragrant Egyptian coffee, a traditional tea, or an apple-flavored hookah while watching the constant bustle of Cairo’s most authentic neighborhood. Transfer and check-in at the hotel. In the evening, join us for an optional, unique experience on the legendary Nile. You’ll enjoy dinner on an elegant floating restaurant as you cruise along the waters of the river that has been giving life to Egypt for thousands of years. To the sounds of Middle Eastern music, you’ll watch a spectacular show featuring traditional Tanoura and belly dance performances, while the enchanting panorama of illuminated Cairo unfolds around you. After breakfast, we set out for one of the most important and exciting days of our trip. Our first destination is Giza, one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the entire world. Before us stand the famous Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, monuments of unique architecture and part of the world’s cultural heritage, which have stood imposingly on the edge of the desert for thousands of years. The Great Pyramid of Cheops is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that has survived to this day, inspiring awe with its size, the precision of its construction, and the mysteries that still surround it. In the same area, we’ll come face to face with the mysterious Great Sphinx, the iconic statue with the body of a lion and a human face, which seems to eternally guard the Giza Plateau. Next, we’ll visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, known internationally as the GEM, one of the largest and most modern archaeological museums in the world. Its impressive halls house priceless treasures from different periods of ancient Egyptian civilization, presenting in a unique way the history, daily life, religion, and art of Ancient Egypt. Among the most significant exhibits is the famous collection of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, featuring gold objects, jewelry, personal grave goods, and ritual objects that reveal the wealth and splendor of his era. And the excitement continues in a completely different way. As the sun begins to set, we’ll board a traditional felucca for a relaxing cruise on the waters of the Nile. With the cool breeze from the river, the colors of the sunset, and bustling Cairo spreading out around us, we’ll enjoy one of the most authentic and atmospheric experiences of the trip. After breakfast, we depart for Alexandria, the legendary city founded by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C., which for centuries was one of the most important intellectual, commercial, and cultural centers of the ancient world. After about a three-hour drive, this great Mediterranean city unfolds before us. Built on the northwestern edge of the Nile Delta, between the Mediterranean Sea and Lake Mareotis, Alexandria has developed a distinctive cosmopolitan character since ancient times. Here, Greek, Egyptian, and Roman civilizations converged, creating a city synonymous with knowledge, the sciences, trade, and the arts. Our first stop is the famous Pompey’s Pillar, one of the city’s most recognizable ancient monuments. It is an impressive monolith approximately 27 meters high, made of red granite, which dominates the Serapeum archaeological site. We continue to the Catacombs of Kom el-Sukafa, the largest known Roman funerary complex in Egypt. They consist of successive underground levels, tombs, chambers, and corridors, where Egyptian, Greek, and Roman architectural and decorative elements are uniquely combined. Next is the Roman Amphitheater of Kom el-Dikka, one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Egypt. Its marble seating and distinctive structure reveal the importance of Alexandria during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Next, we’ll visit the impressive Qaitbay Fortress, which was built in the 15th century at the edge of the city’s eastern harbor. The fortress was built near the site where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today, it is one of the most important defensive monuments in the Mediterranean and one of the city’s most photographed landmarks, offering a unique view of the sea and the coastal boulevard. Our tour continues to the modern Library of Alexandria, an impressive tribute to the ancient library that was one of the most significant centers of knowledge and scientific research in the ancient world. The new Bibliotheca Alexandrina symbolically carries on this great tradition, hosting books, exhibitions, museums, research centers, and cultural events. To complete the cultural puzzle of Alexandria, we will pay tribute to the great Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy, with a visit to the house where he lived and created. The site now functions as a museum and houses personal belongings, manuscripts, photographs, and publications of his work, transporting visitors to the atmosphere of cosmopolitan Alexandria in the early 20th century. After completing our tour, we return to Cairo. Arrival at the hotel and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we’ll head to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), one of Egypt’s most important and modern museums. Here we’ll have the opportunity to explore the country’s history not in fragments, but as a fascinating journey spanning thousands of years, from prehistoric times and the era of the pharaohs through the Greco-Roman, Coptic, and Islamic periods to modern Egypt. In its impressive galleries, the entire history of one of humanity’s most significant civilizations unfolds through precious archaeological finds, works of art, everyday objects, manuscripts, and unique historical artifacts. The highlight of our visit is the famous Hall of the Royal Mummies, an evocative space designed to resemble the underground royal tombs of ancient Egypt. Here lie the mummies of some of the most important pharaohs and queens in Egyptian history, offering us a rare and awe-inspiring “encounter” with figures who lived and reigned more than 3,000 years ago. We then shift eras and scenery as we head to historic Coptic Cairo, one of the city’s oldest and most atmospheric neighborhoods and a place of particular significance for the history of Christianity in Egypt. We will visit the famous Hanging Church of the Virgin Mary (Hanging Church), one of Cairo’s most important Coptic monuments, as well as the impressive Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, with its distinctive circular architecture. A special highlight is our visit to the historic Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga). According to Christian tradition, beneath the church lies the crypt where the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and the Divine Infant are believed to have taken refuge during the Flight into Egypt. A place steeped in history and rich in symbolism, it is an important pilgrimage site for Christians. As our tour comes to an end, we bid farewell to Cairo and head to the airport for our return flight, having completed a journey filled with sights, history, and unique experiences.
