Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1FLIGHT TO ROME - ROME WALKING TOUR - COLOSSEUM - PIAZZA VENEZIA - PANTHEON - PIAZZA NAVONA - ROME BY NIGHT

Meet at “Macedonia” Airport at 11:15 a.m. for the required security check and flight to Rome. As soon as we land, our tour guide will meet us and we’ll board the bus. Heading toward the city center, we’ll start getting into the spirit of things as we receive our first essential information. Without wasting any time, we’ll immediately begin our walking tour at the city’s iconic landmark, the Colosseum, the largest Roman amphitheater (if you’d like, you can visit the interior on your own). Walking along the Ancient Roman Forums, we’ll head to the city’s “ground zero”: Piazza Venezia. There, the impressive Monument to the Unification of Italy stands out, offering a unique visual experience. Our walk continues to one of the most beautiful and charming sights, the Pantheon. A 2,000-year-old temple dedicated to all the gods, so exceptionally well-preserved that it stands as a landmark of Western architecture. Next, we’ll admire the Palazzo Montecitorio (the Italian Parliament) and the neighboring square with the impressive Column of Marcus Aurelius, before ending up at the atmospheric Piazza Navona. There, the three ornate fountains—most notably Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers—steal the show. In the square, which is bustling with life thanks to street artists, cafés, and restaurants, we’ll have some free time to relax. It’s time to head to our hotel to rest and settle into our rooms. In the afternoon, as the autumn light fades, we invite you to join us on a magical optional night tour (Roma by Night), so we can discover together the most authentic and vibrant side of the Italian capital. So, from the famous Piazza Navona, we head toward the Campo de’ Fiori area, which will charm you with its liveliness, its vibrant colors, and its narrow, picturesque alleys. Then, crossing the Tiber River, we arrive at the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, in the heart of the neighborhood of the same name, which is one of Rome’s most picturesque and cosmopolitan neighborhoods. In Trastevere, you’ll have free time to enjoy your evening. We highly recommend trying traditional Roman dishes, such as the authentic, rich Carbonara, Cacio e Pepe pasta (with Pecorino cheese and pepper), or the classic Saltimbocca alla Romana (tender veal with prosciutto and sage). All these dishes are perfectly paired with a glass of local red wine from the Lazio region or a sparkling Prosecco, bringing our day to a delightful close before we return to the hotel.

DAY 2VATICAN MUSEUMS - ST. PETER'S BASILICA - CASTLE OF THE ANGELS - TIVOLI - PIAZZA DEL POPOLO - VILLA BORGHESE - VIA DEL CORSO

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we set off for the independent city-state of Vatican City, ready for a unique guided tour. The Vatican Museums, which need no special introduction, are one of the world’s premier museum complexes. We’ll tour the vast collection of the Roman Catholic Church, marveling at everything from famous statues of the ancient world to Renaissance masterpieces. Along the way, we’ll discover priceless treasures: the Corridor of the Candelabra, the impressive Tapestry and Map Galleries, as well as the famous Raphael Rooms. Our tour will culminate in the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo’s frescoes will leave us speechless, representing one of the greatest achievements in world art. Afterward, there will be time for those who wish to visit (on their own) the largest church in Christendom, St. Peter’s Basilica. Built over the burial site of the Apostle, it houses Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the “Pietà,” inside. This is followed by free time in the historic center. An excellent choice for your stroll is the impressive Castel Sant’Angelo (Castle of the Angels). This iconic fortress, originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, towers majestically over the Tiber and is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. At its summit stands the statue of the Archangel Michael, offering one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Rome beneath the gentle autumn sky. In the afternoon, for those who choose to do so, there is the option to join a magical, optional excursion to Tivoli. Once the most famous resort of the Roman aristocracy, it is a mesmerizing, lush green oasis. There, we’ll visit the famous Villa d’Este, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that looks like something out of a fairy tale. You’ll stroll through the multi-level Renaissance gardens, where the sound of hundreds of fountains and waterfalls creates an atmosphere of absolute tranquility and luxury. It’s the perfect setting to relax, take the most beautiful photos of your trip, and experience the glamour of the Italian countryside, before we head back to our hotel in the late afternoon. Alternatively, for those staying in the city center, we recommend visiting Piazza del Popolo and taking a stroll through Villa Borghese. It is a lush, 800-stremma park in the heart of the city, beautifully landscaped with Italian and English gardens, lakes, fountains, statues, centuries-old trees, and museums. The favorite spot of Rome’s residents is Pincio Hill. Head to its edge, at Piazzale Napoleone, to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view, especially in the soft autumn light, with the churches and domes blending harmoniously with the rest of the city. From there, you can head down to Piazza del Popolo or continue on to Trinità dei Monti, where the historic Casina Valadier café and restaurant sits at the top of the hill. Of course, if you prefer the hustle and bustle of the market, you can stroll down the main street, Via del Corso, to experience the city on your own terms while doing some shopping.

DAY 3FREE DAY / OPTIONAL DAY TRIP TO FLORENCE

Today is all about your own wishes. You can spend your time in the Eternal City however you like, enjoying Rome’s unique autumn atmosphere. Alternatively, we suggest you join us on an optional day trip (by train or bus) to the city that gave birth to the Renaissance and needs no introduction: the city of the Medici, Florence. Alternatively, we suggest you join us on a magical day trip (by train or bus) to the city that gave birth to the Renaissance: Florence. A true city-museum, filled with paintings, frescoes, and sculptures from the golden age of art and culture. Florence is a true city-museum, filled with paintings, frescoes, and sculptures from the richest and most productive period that art and culture have ever known. During our tour, we will visit the Church of the Holy Cross (Santa Croce), one of the city’s most impressive churches and the final resting place of more than 270 distinguished Florentines, including Galileo, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli. Next, we’ll admire the famous Ponte Vecchio with its distinctive houses and jewelry shops that seem to hover over the Arno River—one of the city’s most iconic sights. Immediately afterward, in Piazza della Signoria, we’ll see the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of the local government for about seven hundred years, which today houses important sculptures. Our tour continues to Piazza San Giovanni, home to the third-largest cathedral in Europe, Santa Maria del Fiore, with Brunelleschi’s imposing dome serving as a symbol and trademark of Florence. Afterward, you’ll have free time to stroll around, enjoy an authentic gelato, and shop at the traditional San Lorenzo market. Late in the afternoon, we’ll head back to Rome.

DAY 4ROME - BAROQUE ART IN ROME - PIAZZA NAVONA - FONTANA DI TREVI - PIAZZA DI SPAGNA - RETURN FLIGHT

It’s our last day in the “Eternal City,” but Rome’s magic never ceases to amaze us. With the crisp autumn morning lending a special charm to the monuments and squares, we make the most of our time with one more—and the last for this trip—special guided tour, dedicated to the art of the Baroque, which was born and flourished in Rome. Its leading figures were Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. These two great artists initially worked together at St. Peter’s Basilica and the Palazzo Barberini. However, intense professional rivalry, their differing personalities, and conflicts in their artistic philosophies soon led to a deep rift, turning them into timeless rivals. During our tour, starting from Piazza Navona, we’ll follow in their footsteps on a leisurely walk of about two kilometers, admiring some of their most important works, such as the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, as well as notable Roman Catholic churches, including Sant’Agnese in Agone, Sant’Agostino, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Sant’Ignazio di Loyola, and San Luigi dei Francesi. Next up is the famous Trevi Fountain, a cinematic setting that’s sure to inspire some of the most beautiful photos of your trip. Don’t forget the tradition: if you toss a coin into its waters, you’re sure to return to the Eternal City one day. Our tour will conclude at Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps), one of Rome’s most famous squares, a popular meeting spot, and the very heart of haute couture, home to boutiques of the most famous fashion houses. As this special tour comes to an end, take advantage of your free time to enjoy one last authentic Italian espresso or to visit those spots you didn’t have time to explore in the previous days. It’s the perfect time for one last stroll through your favorite alleys, to buy your final souvenirs, or simply to etch the last images of this city—a master of aesthetics and style—into your memory. Filled with experiences, culture, and the spirit of the Italian dolce vita, we’ll head to the airport for our direct return flight with Aegean Airlines. Our journey is coming to an end, but the charm of Rome will stay with us for a long time, leaving us with the sweet anticipation of the next time we’ll find ourselves once again on its historic paths.
