Field Trip Itinerary

DAY 1FLIGHT TO HERAKLION - CITY TOUR

Meet at “MAKEDONIA” Airport at 11:15 a.m. and depart on a direct flight to Heraklion, the capital of Crete and a city with a long history, a vibrant atmosphere, and a unique character. Upon our arrival on the island, we begin our first encounter with a place that has been a crossroads of civilizations and peoples for centuries, a fact reflected in every corner of the city. Heraklion, with its timeless presence from antiquity to the present day, carries memories of the Minoan era, Arab rule, the Venetian years, and modern Greek history. The city, once known as Chandakas and later as Kardia, retains its unique character to this day and beautifully combines its historical past with its modern urban rhythm.

During our tour of the historic center, we’ll have the chance to explore the city’s most important sights, walking through streets and squares steeped in history. We will see Eleftherias Square, a landmark of the city; the famous Venetian Morosini Fountain with its lions, one of Heraklion’s most iconic monuments; the Church of Saint Titus, one of Crete’s most significant religious sites; the imposing Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Minas, as well as the elegant Venetian Loggia, which bears witness to the splendor of the Venetian period. The picturesque alleys, the neoclassical buildings, and the lively rhythm of the city create a wonderful atmosphere from the very first moment. We’ll have free time for lunch and a first authentic encounter with the city center before heading to our hotel to settle in and rest. The first day ends with the sweet feeling that the journey has just begun and Crete is already winning us over.

DAY 2ENYDRIO - ELOUDAS PLAKA - SPINALOGKA - AGIOS NIKOLAOS

After our hearty breakfast at the hotel, we start our day with a visit to the famous CRETAQUARIUM, one of the largest and most modern aquariums in Europe, located near Heraklion and considered one of the Mediterranean’s most important centers for marine education and entertainment. In its well-organized spaces, we will have the opportunity to experience the fascinating underwater world of the Mediterranean up close, observe dozens of species of fish, marine organisms, and rare life forms, and to feel the magic of the deep sea through a unique presentation. This visit is an experience that combines knowledge, imagery, and wonder, offering a very interesting start to our day.

We then depart for the beautiful region of Elounda and the idyllic village of Plaka, a small but exceptionally charming seaside settlement, built across from the legendary Spinalonga. The scenery here is truly enchanting, as the calm waters of the bay, the traditional houses, and the view of the historic island create a setting of rare beauty. From Plaka, those who wish can optionally board a small boat to travel to Spinalonga, the island inextricably linked to a harrowing chapter of modern Greek history. The Venetian fortress, the island’s strategic importance, and its use as a leper colony until the mid-20th century have given Spinalonga a unique and deeply charged identity. The island’s landscape, history, and atmosphere evoke intense emotions, while the publicity it gained through well-known literary works and television adaptations has made it even more famous.

After our stay in Plaka, we continue on to Agios Nikolaos, one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan towns in Crete. Built amphitheatrically and bathed in the light of the Cretan sun, Agios Nikolaos charms visitors with its elegance and island atmosphere. The heart of the city is the famous Lake Voulismeni, the picturesque inland lagoon connected to the sea, around which cafes, taverns, and lovely spots for a stroll are scattered. Here we’ll have free time for a stroll and lunch, enjoying the city’s relaxed atmosphere and its unique scenery. In the afternoon, we return to Heraklion, our minds filled with images of eastern Crete. For the evening, we suggest an optional outing to a traditional Cretan venue, where through live music, local dances, flavors, and good cheer, we’ll get to know the island’s authentic character even better.

DAY 3KNOSSOS - SFENDONI CAVE - ZONIANA - HOLY MONASTERY OF DISKOURIO - ANOGEIA

After breakfast, we set off for one of the most iconic archaeological sites in all of Greece, Knossos, where the heart of Minoan civilization once beat. A visit to the Palace of Knossos is undoubtedly one of the most significant experiences of the trip, as it brings us into contact with one of Europe’s oldest and most advanced civilizations. At this site, which according to tradition is linked to King Minos, the myth of the Labyrinth, and the Minotaur, we will be guided by an official local tour guide, who will help us understand the history, architecture, and significance of this Minoan marvel. As we walk through the palace, the corridors, the royal apartments, and the restored frescoes, we will feel as though we are traveling back in time to an era of splendor, art, and organized life.

We then leave ancient Crete behind and head toward the heart of the mountainous interior, on a route that reveals a different side of the island—more authentic, wild, and deeply traditional. Our destination is Zoniana and the impressive Sfentoni Cave, one of the most beautiful caves open to visitors in Greece. The cave, with its rich stalactite and stalagmite formations, its mysterious atmosphere, and its natural grandeur, impresses every visitor. A visit to this site is not only an encounter with natural beauty but also a plunge into an underground world full of shapes, silence, and awe. The Psiloritis region, moreover, has been designated a UNESCO Geopark, a testament to the significance and uniqueness of its natural wealth.

We continue with a visit to the Holy Monastery of Diskourio, a site of historical and religious significance, located in a beautiful setting near Livadia Mylopotamos. This monastery is among the oldest in Crete and exudes serenity, spirituality, and a deep connection to Cretan tradition. The surrounding landscape, the tranquility, and the simplicity of the place create a special sense of calm. Our day concludes in historic Anogia, a place that symbolizes the spirit, resistance, and musical tradition of Crete. This village, built at a high altitude on the slopes of Psiloritis, is closely linked to the lyre, the mantinades, strong personalities, and the authentic Cretan spirit. Here we’ll have free time to stroll and eat, with the perfect opportunity to try the famous antikristo and other local delicacies at one of the village’s traditional taverns. Later, we return to Heraklion, having discovered yet another unique side of Crete, rich in history, nature, and tradition.

DAY 4HERAKLION - ARKADI - RETHYMNO - LAKE KOURNA - CHANIA

After breakfast, we bid farewell to Heraklion and set off for western Crete, following a route full of ever-changing scenery, historical landmarks, and unique landscapes. The first major stop of the day is the Holy Monastery of Arkadi, one of the most historic and symbolic monuments on the entire island. This monastery is not merely a religious center, but a powerful symbol of freedom and self-sacrifice, as one of the most heroic chapters in Cretan history was written here, with the massacre of 1866 during the Cretan Revolution. A visit to Arkadi is deeply moving, as the site vividly preserves the memory of those events and inspires awe in the visitor. The monastery’s architecture, its historical significance, and the atmosphere of the place make this experience truly unique.

We continue on to Rethymno, a charming, atmospheric city and one of the best-preserved historic towns in Greece. Here, Venetian elegance, Ottoman influence, and the Cretan temperament coexist harmoniously, creating a unique character. During our tour, we’ll explore the Venetian harbor, the Fortezza towering imposingly over the city, the narrow alleys of the old town, the small squares, the traditional shops, and the lively atmosphere that makes Rethymno so beloved by every visitor. We’ll have free time for coffee and a stroll, enjoying the special aura of this city that combines romance, history, and authenticity.

Our journey continues to Lake Kournas, Crete’s only natural lake, a place of exceptional natural beauty. Surrounded by hills and mountains, with calm waters and a landscape that exudes serenity, the lake is one of the most beautiful stops on our journey. The scenery is idyllic and offers a pleasant respite before we continue on to the day’s final destination. Late in the afternoon, we arrive in Chania, one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean, and check into our hotel. In the evening, with the help of our guide, we’ll get our first taste of the city’s picturesque alleys and enchanting atmosphere, which captivates you from the very first moment with its romantic and stately beauty.

DAY 5MALEME - KOLYMBARI - KISSAMOS - FALASARNA

Breakfast at the hotel. Today is a day for relaxation and free time. You can spend it exploring Chania at your own pace or join our suggested optional excursion to western Crete. Alternatively, join us on an optional excursion dedicated to the western side of Crete, featuring a route that combines historical interest, coastal scenery, and one of the most impressive beaches in the Mediterranean. We depart from Chania and head first to Maleme, a place of particular historical significance, as it is directly linked to the Battle of Crete in 1941. This area was a pivotal point in the German invasion of the island during World War II and serves as a place of remembrance and historical significance. Reflecting on the events of that era brings us into contact with an important chapter in the modern history of Crete and reveals the magnitude of the sacrifice and resistance of its inhabitants.

We continue on to Kolymbari, a beautiful seaside village with a peaceful atmosphere and authentic Cretan character. The area is known not only for its natural beauty but also for its religious and historical significance, as it is home to the Gonia Monastery, a monastery linked to significant moments in Cretan history and the island’s resistance against its conquerors. The monastery’s presence, the surrounding environment, and its unique location enhance the area’s distinctive character. Our journey continues toward Kissamos, a region blessed by nature, bringing us ever closer to one of the island’s most renowned destinations.

The final major stop of the day is Falasarna Beach, which is rightly considered one of the best beaches in Europe. The first sight that greets the visitor is truly mesmerizing. The endless sandy shore, the turquoise waters, the open horizon, and the unpretentious grandeur of the landscape create an almost exotic experience. The area, which in ancient times was an important port, combines natural beauty with historical depth, and today is an ideal place to relax, swim, and enjoy the Cretan summer vibe. We’ll have free time to enjoy the sea, walk along the beach, relax, and have lunch at a local tavern in the area. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Chania, having experienced one of the most beautiful and vibrant days of the trip. The evening is free for strolling through the old town, the Venetian harbor, and the atmospheric alleys of the city, which take on an even more enchanting appearance at night.

DAY 5AKROTIRI - VENIZELOS FAMILY TOMBS - AGIA TRIADA TZAGKAROLON - CHANIA CITY TOUR - RETURN FLIGHT

After breakfast, we depart for Cape Chania, an area of exceptional natural beauty, historical significance, and panoramic views of the city and the sea. Our first stop is the Venizelos Family Tombs, located in a particularly striking spot that combines remembrance, history, and a unique natural setting. Here lies the tomb of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the most significant figures in modern Greek history, while the location offers a sweeping view of Chania, creating an image that leaves a lasting impression on visitors. The site, with its cypress trees, simple landscape, and sense of historical reverence, evokes both serenity and emotion.

We continue our tour with a visit to the Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity of Tzagarolon, one of the most significant and beautiful monastic complexes in Crete. The monastery, with its distinct Venetian architectural elements, rich history, and significant spiritual legacy, impresses both with its stately appearance and the serenity it exudes. The olive groves that surround it, the symmetry of the buildings, and the sense of calm that pervades the space combine to create an image of authentic beauty and spirituality. A visit here is the perfect way to round out the day, offering a different, more peaceful and contemplative side of the Cretan landscape.

Then we return to the city of Chania for our final exploration of the old town, one of the most captivating and atmospheric cities in Greece. During our tour, we will walk through the narrow cobblestone streets of the old town, among Venetian mansions, Ottoman monuments, churches, and picturesque neighborhoods that seem to tell stories of centuries past. We’ll pass through Splantzia, one of Chania’s most historic neighborhoods, see the Church of Saint Nicholas with its unique history, tour the Venetian harbor, and admire the Firka Fortress, the Yali Mosque, the Great Arsenal, and of course the iconic Chania Lighthouse, a symbol of the city and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Mediterranean. Chania captivates with its elegance, history, and beauty, making it the perfect finale to this journey through Crete.

We’ll have free time for coffee, lunch, and some last-minute souvenir shopping, soaking up the city’s unique atmosphere as much as we can. Later, we’ll head to Chania Airport for our return flight, taking with us unique images, vivid experiences, scents, flavors, and the feeling that we’ve discovered a special, authentic, and deeply charming island.
